knapplc
I'd call this the "Covid-19" thread but that's about the most unmemorable name of a disease ever. So, tl;dr: a novel coronavirus has come out of China and is threatening the world. Fatality rates as high as the Spanish Flu pandemic in 1918 that killed upwards of 50 million people worldwide. America needs strong leadership at this time. Instead, we have Trump. 1 Link to comment

This looks to be somewhere between worse than swine flu and less severe than SARS. Source Link to comment
knapplc
It's difficult to say precisely. Some data suggests it's as deadly as the 1918 pandemic: Quote A case fatality rate of between 2% to 4% rivals and even exceeds that of the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic, which is estimated to have killed upwards of 50 million people. Even a case fatality rate of 0.7% — which means 7 out of every 1,000 infected people would die — is sobering. It is seven times the fatality rate for seasonal flu, which is estimated to kill between 290,000 and 650,000 people a year globally. SOURCE Link to comment
QMany
First, Trump can't spell Coronavirus. Next: Trump just appointed Mike Pence the Coronavirus Czar. Yes, science-denier Mike Pence: That mishandled a HIV outbreak in Indiana, That believes cigarettes don't cause cancer. "Despite the hysteria from the political class and the media, smoking doesn't kill." Turns out, the CDC and basically every one with a brain disagrees: ""Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death." That believes "condoms are a very, very poor protection against sexually transmitted disease." Again, that pesky CDC says ""correct and consistent use of the male latex condom is highly effective in reducing [sexually transmitted disease, STD] transmission." That believes ""Global warming is a myth." That advocated for programs offering assistance to people looking to change their sexual behavior (read: "conversion therapy"). What could possibly go wrong!?! 2 Link to comment

Remember when the US forgot to start saving money when it was having good fiscal times and instead gave it all away to billionaires. FrantzHardySwag
Outside of China the mortality rate seems to sit at 1-2%, but that makes sense with more developed countries and more resources poured into each patient due to less cases. My hunch is there are more cases then being reported - which would bring the mortality rate down further. Many healthy adults may just have a dry cough and slight fever, if that. Where this gets deadly is the immunocompromised people, infection travels to the lungs, patient gets pneumonia, patient then develops ARDs - many people aren’t bouncing back from that. Now isn’t the time to panic, but it is the time to let the CDC get out in front of it and soften the blow. Trumps kinda screwing the pooch in that regard, prepare for the worst and hope for the best.
