DevoHusker
Isn't that a non-approved prophylactic's? And I thought I read it was only an offline use for those with severe Covid symptoms...? 1 Link to comment

And I thought I read it was only an offline use for those with severe Covid symptoms...? Per Yale Medicine: Paxlovid is an oral antiviral pill that can be taken at home to help keep high-risk patients from getting so sick that they need to be hospitalized. So, if you test positive for the coronavirus (and your doctor writes you a prescription), you can take pills at home and lower your risk of going to the hospital. The drug, developed by Pfizer, appears to have a lot of positives: It had an 89% reduction in the risk of hospitalization and death in the clinical trial that supported the EUA, a number that was high enough to prompt the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to prioritize it over other COVID-19 treatments; it’s cheaper than many other COVID-19 drugs (it’s provided for free by the U.S. government while there is a public health emergency); and, perhaps most reassuring, it is expected to work against the Omicron variant. “I think it is the beginning of a ‘game-changer,’” says Scott Roberts, MD, a Yale Medicine infectious diseases specialist. “It's really our first efficacious oral antiviral pill for this virus. It shows clear benefit, and it really can prevent hospitalization and death in people who are at high risk.” 2 Link to comment

Merck's pill wasn't nearly as effective, and the monoclonal antibodies are strain-specific. Link to comment

I imagine Trump did too when he had it. Link to comment

I remember Merck abandoned their vaccine effort (can't remember if it was development or manufacturing) early on in favor of developing a treatment. I'm sure it was disappointing. Link to comment

nic
Or not....China is clamping down in very draconian ways in Shang Hai. No way it would fly in the US. China reporting is less than reliable, but why are they doing this for Omicron BA2? Are deaths really only at 26 a day running average? NY Times charts below. Running average on deaths in the US is currently 328 and Fauci is saying we are out of the woods. 1 Link to comment

I guess that officially bookends what ended up being an almost 26-month long public health emergency. But can we trust him? Why is he saying this now? I think he wants people to think it's over so more folks get sick and he can make money of the vaccines! He's trying to kill GOP voters because he knows they aren't as likely vaccinated. He wants things to get bad so he can shut down the country again! Don't be a sheep! Wear your masks! They only want us to think it's over!!!! No is the time to get serious. Practice Social distance! Wash your hands! STAY HOME!!!!! Only God can tell us when it's over!!!! 1 1 Link to comment

Jason Sitoke
I didn't expect the next pandemic to start so soon. "Just hours after saying the U.S. was out of the “pandemic phase,” Dr. Anthony Fauci, President Joe Biden’s chief medical adviser and a leading infectious disease expert, clarified that he should have said the acute phase was over." https://www.marketwatch.com/story/pandemic-is-not-over-yet-says-dr-fauci-and-who-says-omicron-accounted-for-99-7-of-all-cases-sequenced-in-latest-week-11651156876?mod=home-page 3 Link to comment
