Health Secretary Asks For Emergency Coronavirus Funding While Trump Calls For 16% Cut To CDC Budget

Because of course.

Which government inaction is likely to kill more innocent people, this or Benghazi?

In fairness, neither the stock market drop nor the coronavirus is in any way Donald Trump's fault, but it's vaguely amusing that he's now worried about poorly informed voters over-reacting.

If anything, the news media has been cautious, even a little slow, in elevating the threat. The stock markets simply don't like any uncertainly, and I think we're stuck with uncertainty for awhile.

Don't get me started on this topic.

Cut their salary in half would be a good start.

That would be a bit off topic:backtotopic

“The trajectory of what we’re looking at over the weeks and months ahead is very uncertain, but many of the steps that we have taken over the past 15 years to prepare for pandemic influenza and our experience going through the 2009 H1N1 pandemic of influenza remind us of the kinds of steps that our health care system, our businesses, our communities and schools may need to take,” Dr. Anne Schuchat, CDC’s principal deputy director, said during a press conference at the White House on Wednesday.

It’s the perfect time for businesses, health care systems, universities and schools to look at their pandemic preparedness plans, dust them off and make sure that they’re ready.”

Outside of China the mortality rate seems to sit at 1-2%, but that makes sense with more developed countries and more resources poured into each patient due to less cases. My hunch is there are more cases then being reported - which would bring the mortality rate down further. Many healthy adults may just have a dry cough and slight fever, if that. Where this gets deadly is the immunocompromised people, infection travels to the lungs, patient gets pneumonia, patient then develops ARDs - many people aren’t bouncing back from that.

Now isn’t the time to panic, but it is the time to let the CDC get out in front of it and soften the blow. Trumps kinda screwing the pooch in that regard, prepare for the worst and hope for the best.

PSA: Practice good hand hygiene:

There's also some confusion over how the mortality rate is being calculated. The way it should be calculated is fatalities over fatalities plus recovered patients, but I've heard that some of the rates are being calculated as fatalities over total cases, which would make the morality rate higher than being reported.
