I know some aren't going to agree.  But, I still want Harris.

As do I, I think she's been the obvious pick from the start.

Why? She doesn't do better in any demographic than Biden, and she has a poor civil rights record as a DA. I just can't see what makes her appealing as Biden's VP.

I don't really care about her DA record that has been made a deal of.  If that's the case, no DA should ever run for public office because someone will always be able to go find something that doesn't look good.

She's smart, articulate, experienced in the legal/law enforcement system that needs reformed.  I'm always impressed with her ability to get her point across without coming off offensive.  Many politicians, both male and female have issues with that.  I think she represents herself well, which makes her a good representative for our country.

I also think she's someone who can appeal to the middle (geographic and political) of the country.

Agree here. We want people with good experience but if you have experience in a leadership role, especially in that type of job, you are gonna do things that are unpopular with someone.

Thanks. We'll have to disagree as I think Harris is particularly unqualified to deal with the legal/law enforcement system that needs to be reformed.

Her record as a DA was pretty progressive, you're referencing her time as California's AG. Where she introduced some progressive ideas, but mainly was status quo. Vox had a pretty good article on it. Something like 90% of elected DA's and AG's are white men - they speculated she felt pressure to not upend the system and get immediately voted out. Like others noted, she's a polished speaker, she shows empathy, her record in the senate has been very progressive, and I would be lying if I didn't say it's a good idea to have a Black woman on the ticket in a time we are very divided. Both Blacks and Women, are groups that are under represented in politics.

Every Veep candidate has flaws, but let's not forget, perfect is the enemy of good.

I meant both as DA and as AG. Harris claims herself to be progressive, but I don't agree. She started out different 15 years ago, but was like basically every other DA or AG since then, which is part of the problem when reform is needed.

This article sums it up for me:

News broke on Tuesday that Kamala Harris was ending her run for president. While there are a number of reasons her candidacy was not successful, chief among them was her decision to brand herself a “progressive prosecutor.” She was not, at least not by today’s standards.

The Achilles heel for the Harris campaign has been a perceived lack of authenticity. There is no better example of the gap between public presentation and historical record than her mischaracterization of who she was and what she did from 2004-2015, when she was San Francisco’s district attorney and then California’s attorney general. In truth, Harris’s record reveals that she is a centrist on criminal justice. Had she run on that record or reckoned with it—including acknowledging the harm her status-quo policies inflicted—the outcome might have been different.

Harris also failed to hold police and prosecutors accountable for misconduct. In Orange County, where a sprawling jailhouse informant scandal has robbed countless people of their right to a fair trial, her lack of meaningful oversight has contributed to a crisis of legitimacy that continues to upend the county’s criminal justice system.

In 2015, when called upon by the Legislative Black Caucus to support bills that would have mandated that all police officers wear body worn cameras and that the Attorney General’s office investigate lethal officer-involved shootings, she declined.  She championed a law that went after the parents of chronically truant children, laughed when asked if marijuana should be legal, and supported a system that locks up people who are too poor to post exorbitant money bail. These policies were part and parcel of a system of mass incarceration that has deeply harmed poor people and communities of color.

Pretty much anyone Biden picks will be more progressive than what I desire, however, in times like these - the most important thing is to remove Trump and to have a capable VP who can step in if needed due to Joe's aging issues.  I am comfortable with both Harris and Warren being that person.  Again, they may not fit my philosophical profile but I believe they can do the job if called upon.  I'm not a big fan of Susan Rice but I'm sure she will be in a Biden Admin - probably Sec of State.  Val Demmings is OK but I prefer more experience.

This was posted in another thread, but I thought it belonged here too.

Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.), one of the key proponents of the Democratic proposal in the Senate, said she had not talked with any Republicans on Thursday about the bill. Bass added that she had not been part of talks with Scott or other Senate Republicans. And Graham has all but closed the door to Democrats’ suggestion of bringing a bill up in the Judiciary Committee.
