What to stock up on in case of quarantine

It's preparation in case you or someone in your house gets coronavirus and you need to self-quarantine for 2 weeks. It's more about doing your best to limit the spread of the virus.

I and everyone in my house could self quarantine for 3 weeks, easily, without doing what people are doing right now. We’ve got a pantry in the basement that we could get by on without having to go stark raving mad like people seem to be doing.

This is a post that is not likely to age well.

Why won’t this age well?

It’s literally been like the zombie apocalypse around here the last couple of days. I guess maybe I assume that most people are like me and already had at least a couple weeks worth of stuff. I feel much better about what I said than with how people seem to be behaving right now. I’ve got horror stories about the last couple of days. It’s ridiculous.

It's great that YOU are prepared. Everyone isn't as on-the-ball as you. They're catching up. Why are you downplaying their efforts?

It's looking more and more likely that a lot of us will be working from home for a portion of the next several weeks, or even quarantined at home if things get bad.

We've also seen that people are panic-buying supplies - but the wrong ones! Sure, toilet paper is nice to have on hand, but it's not an essential when you're house-bound for two weeks.

Here's a common-sense list of stuff you should have on hand in case of quarantine:

FOOD

Dried beans - You have to soak them for 24 hours, but they're better than canned. Or just buy canned.

Rice - world-wide staple that can be used in 1,287,236 dishes. The one thing you HAVE to buy.

Canned meats, soups, stews - Something soothing like chicken noodle if you're sick. Something wholesome & filling if you're just hungry

Canned veggies & fruit - they last longer than fresh fruits & contain tons of vitamins

Salt & Pepper

Coffee or tea (if you drink foo-foo drinks, you're going to have a bad time)

Dried fruits & nuts - Healthy, easy snack food requiring no prep

Potatoes - I just bought a 10lb bag for maybe $3.50. There's a million ways to make potatoes, and they're filling.

Onions - a 3lb bag should set you back about $3.00 and they'll add a ton of flavor to your food

Garlic - A few heads of garlic can be a godsend, and like onions they'll stay edible for a two-week quarantine

Cooking oil

Big bag of frozen Chicken Breasts

Hamburger - 5lb, frozen

A couple of roasts like chuck roast or pork shoulder. You can get several meals out of this if they're big enough. Easy to make, filling & long-lasting.

Bullion cubes! These things aren't the best food in the world, but they can make a palatable broth and they're cheap & shelf-stable.

Spices - go through your spice cabinet & make sure you're topped off.

Get your favorite sauces, too. Sriracha, ketchup, mayo, soy sauce, whatever. Don't eat bland food if you don't have to!

I know not everyone has a huge freezer, so if you're dealing with a relatively small fridge/freezer in an apartment, buy more canned meat than frozen.

Some people are buying up water. OK, that's not an awful idea, but it's not crucial. We're not likely to lose utilities like water & gas, so save your money. If anything, buy a water filter, like this.

MEDS & STUFF

Refill your prescription meds! Talk to the pharmacist and/or your insurance provider now about refills. Don't wait until you're stuck in the house - or sick - to try to refill these.

OTC Cold/Flu medicine. Don't wait until you're sick to get cough syrup, ibuprofen, TheraFlu, Gatorade (for electrolytes) or pedialyte if you don't want the sugar

Soap. Cannot stress enough how crucial this will be.

Shampoo, body wash, etc.

All your feminine hygiene products. This doesn't apply to most of us here, but if you're the purchaser for your house & you have girls, get what they need.

All your baby products - diapers, wipes, formula/baby food, aquaphor, all that stuff.

Also, for those of you who have pets, get enough food to last the little guys, including treats.

CLEANING SUPPLIES

Laundry soap, dish soap... anything you need to clean your dishes.

Paper towels

Rags, sponges, or whatever you use to clean up.

Here's a list of the EPA's essentials for COVID-19 cleaning products.

If people get shut in and need some simple recipe ideas, ask and I'll post some basic stuff here.

Reasonable list of basics. Problem is, you couldn’t go out to any store in Greeley today (or even yesterday) and get much of anything on this list. People have gone bonkers. Have you ever seen row upon row of an empty grocery store or Sam’s/Costco? It’s pretty spooky.

I hit Costco yesterday just to buy one of their corned beef packages, saw zero parking and said screw that.  Then I saw the line for gas, JACKPOT.  I waited for a single car and then filled up.  Normally if I am there I don't get gas because the line sits for 20 minutes.

I’m not down playing the effort to make sure your family is covered for 3 or 4 weeks. Not at all. But what I’ve seen is hording and panic buying that is screwing over anybody who hasn’t already gotten their 3 weeks or so worth. Really, I’m not exaggerating.

A little story. My son makes daily deliveries to many grocery stores in the area. Since he will be in them anyway, I asked him to keep an eye open things like hand sanitizer, Lysol spray, disinfectant wipes, hand soap for our dispensers....stuff like that. We need some for home and some for my business. I don’t want too much, just enough. He called this morning and said he found 3 cans of Lysol at King Soopers....but the checkout line, at 8:00 in the morning was wrapped around the store. I figured he was exaggerating. No. I know the store well and he described to me where the line began and ended. Roughly it was the length of a football field. And he went on to describe what a lot of people had in their carts. It wasn’t preparation for 3 weeks, it was pure hording and panic buying. Luckily he knows how the place works, so he went in to the Starbucks, bought a hot chocolate and he was able to pay for his 3 items there. Someone at about mid line told him they had been in line for over an hour.

If anybody is wondering what I had to stock up on today.....I got an AR and a 9MM handgun. Just try and come take my toilet paper

No, really, I did get 2 guns today. Still waiting for the background check to clear. They had 992 to approve ahead of me, estimated wait time was 2 hours 29 minutes.

Edit- it actually took more like 3.5 hours and at that time the list had grown to 1068 in the queue. I didn't realize it but that was just background checks pending in Colorado. When they told me 992 earlier in the day, I assumed that was the whole US. Apparently I wasn't in any minority buying guns today.

I have two freezers and a fridge full of food. Another fridge full of beer. I didn’t hoard, that’s normal this time of year.

What I did think about is that I need tomorrow to stop by the store and see if garden seeds are out yet. If this gets out of hand, I will still be eating well.

The problem is there are lots of people who typically only have a few days worth of food around the house. Maybe they live in an apartment or small house.

As far as guns and ammo. I got enough to hunt for food. Don’t see a reason to think of using it for anything else. AR????   Not needed.

Well, in my defense, the AR could be used for hunting if needed. I did pick up shotgun shells, 5.56/.223 and 9MM yesterday. The shells weren't hard to find but the others, pretty scarce. I've never hunted anything besides waterfowl, pheasants and birds so haven't had any rifles before.

Stock is low now on a lot of convenience food ie spaghetti/pasta etc.......At least in my part of NC....Some larger stores closing early to restock.   Ironically my local Wal-Mart neighborhood market did get in a ton of candy.......I am sure that some items will continue to get delivered and be more available after the initial rush.  Now if we go into the domestic shut down and deliveries won't be allowed (unsure what the plan is) then things will get dicey.  Lived in Florida with the hurricanes and it doesn't take long without food/water/utilities for the best in people to come out.  And that was simply one area of the US where the rest of the US was trying to get in help in and not impacted.....

Like most, I am good for a few weeks, but will re-supply as needed.  Like most.

Again best of luck to y'all.  Stay well.  Per Dr Oz, hand washing and social distancing are the best remedy.....

After all that bragging about how prepared I was the first thing we'll run out of, ironically, is hand soap.  Found 5 bars of soap though, so that ought to be quite a few hand washes.

Still got half a refill size bottle and small bottle of hand soap.

Anyone else discover how much they love touching their face recently?
