I think it's a pretty standard cover you @$$ letter - they don't want to people to feel misled if they do have to cancel the season. Which has always been a strong possibility, despite the pre-fall camp work moving ahead and some conferences releasing schedules. I read it as more of a reminder that this is very much still up in the air rather than a death knell for the season.

The big thing on my mind right now is more that COVID-19 and its various strains are going to become endemic and probably be with us for a while - or forever. Obviously the big thing that weighs into shutting down the football season and encouraging as much distancing as possible is the hope that a successful vaccine is produced relatively quickly.

 

But I have a feeling that roughly 12 months from now this discussion won't have really changed all that much. That's the real mind-bender here.

 

We're still so early in the societal dynamics of this thing. I assume at some point in the next 12-18 months we'll start to say "Look, this thing is here forever and we have to draw a line in the sand on whether the activities/things we did pre-COVID are gone forever or whether we go back to what 'normal' was."

But we're just not there in terms of a consensus here. And that's why I still think this season gets cancelled (even though I want Husker football real bad!).

We are averaging about 300 cases a day for the last 8 days straight.  The last similar stretch of cases was in early May.  12 deaths in the last week and 47 new hospitalizations.  The vast majority of the new cases are in Lincoln and Omaha.

 

As a state, about 1.4% of the population has had a confirmed positive test.  That means we have probably had 10-15% of the population actually have it.  Long ways from herd immunity.

 

The good news is that a spike now will hopefully lead to people being a little more careful so we have another couple month drop around the start of football.  I also think adults will be more careful once grades k-12 starts school in 2 weeks.

I just checked the county that I am from. I am surprised there is that many cases there since there is hardly anyone there in the first place. 

 

But you told us that we are ok on playing football and that we should consider all the information. What has changed?

Is it perfect in all cases?  Apparently not but Fauci approves giving it routinely to our armed forces and tourists and other travelers as a matter of preventative course before overseas travel.    

 

I have taken it many times for malaria prevention while traveling. I am not sure what that has to do with COVID-19.

You need to stop misquoting people, seriously.  

 

I do believe college athletes would be safe to play.  The current data shows this.  However, there are some people in leadership roles that hold your viewpoints.  Maybe enough to get the season cancelled if cases don't drop.

Any credible source for this would be awesome, because from what we're seeing in baseball it is clearly not safe to play. 

 

Btw, the NBA, NHL, MLS, or any other sport that put literally everyone in a bubble doesn't count. College athletes won't be in a bubble.

I think you are all missing a key variable in having a football season. It is not just students that will be key; you also have faculty to contend with as well as staff.
