I think this is more accurate to the gospel as He loved us while we were sinners, helpless, ungodly, enemies and deserving wrath [Romans 5]. In Ephesians 2 we read that we were "without hope", "far away" and "excluded from the Life of God". Yet, God demonstrated His love ... and died. The door to Life IN Christ is available to all ... but you "shouldn't" believe if you really don't want the Love, Life or Liberty He purchased for you IN Christ. Amen.
