Unpopular Opinions: Husker Edition

Recommended Posts

Probably not a super unpopular opinion actually but so far am not even close to being sold on Eric Chinander at defensive coordinator.  Easily the biggest question mark for me this season and beyond is our defense and even with some good recruits we've scored defensively my eyes are squarely on Chinander and the defense especially these next few years.  We have to improve on defense period if we're going to truly take the next step.

If Callahan didn't tie himself to Cosgrove/Keller he probably is still the coach here.

This is an easy reductionistic history that isn't all that accurate imo.

What happened in 2007 was...an anomaly, and as much psychological as anything else. Cosgrove's defenses in 2005 and 2006 were pretty salty. In fact, we would have been Big XII champs in 2006 if the offense would have shown up when it mattered most.

Texas loss - bad luck fumble gave them the ball at the end to win it

Okie State loss - offense floundered and turned the ball over a bunch

Oklahoma loss - threw it 50 times with 4 picks en route to 7 total points

Auburn loss - 14 total points

Defense gave up 28, 22, 39, 21, and 17 to the 5 losses (i think that's right, going off memory).

One other thing regarding Callahan, if he was able to have any type of success at NU, he would have ran back to the NFL as soon as possible.  He wouldn't have been coaching at NU in 2010, let alone 2020.

In that scenario does that eliminate Pelini from ever coaching at UNL?

If Callahan is successful, then Pedeyshine sticks around NU for at least one more hire (assuming Callahan goes to NFL in the 2007-2009) time frame.  There is no way Pedeyshine hires Bo, so Bo probably takes another job after being DC for the LSU National Championship team in 2007.

Would Bo get a Nebraska type job?

His first HC job would have probably been at a mid-major or lower level Power 5 school. After that, I’m not sure.

Yeah that is a tough one.  Hiring the young hot coordinator has been popular for awhile but there was a time when it was a no no.

Obviously the egos would never allow it, but a staff of Riley HC, Bo Pelini as DC, Callahan -OC/ O line, Solich RBs, K Steele OLB.  Dawson DL, Fisher DBs, Lubick WRs.,

and couple good TE and special teams guys and you have a great staff.

There have been other good Assistants too.

We have had good coaches but some were out of position or didnt have solid staffing across the board.  failure resulted.

I wouldn’t trust Riley to coach a pee wee team. Anyone would be a better choice than him.
