The mild-mannered Iba wasn’t king of campus, but he’d quietly accrued the best winning percentage in more than 60 years. Entering the 1985-86 season, Nebraska was coming off three straight NIT appearances and returned one of the best rosters in school history. That included Dave Hoppen, the 6-foot-11 goliath close to becoming the program's all-time leading scorer.

After decades of mediocre basketball, Nebraska appeared to be on the cusp of breaking through to an NCAA tournament bid for the first time in history. But chaos bubbled under the surface. Divisions and politics sowed distrust between Iba and the administration. Any misstep, Iba believed, and he’d be out of a job.
