2020 Adjusted Big Ten Schedule and Bowl Season

Recommended Posts

While we are still waiting to hear if/when the BIG might actually play football, it appears starting games in mid-October might happen in order to ensure the BIG can be a part of the CFP.   Going down this path, a few questions come to mind.

1.  How many total games will be played?

  • My guess is that 8 would be the maximum number of games that could be played if the BIG wants to have a conference championship game completed by December 12.
  • If the BIG starts games on October 10 and has one planned bye-week for makeups, they could still fit in the 9 planned conference games to end the regular season on December 12 and then have hte CCG on December 19

2.  Will some teams opt out of playing this season such as Rutgers who seems like the team who is least interested in playing?

3.  Assuming there will be bowl games (outside of the CFP), will there be a change in the qualification requirements given many teams may not play a full 12-game schedule?  In past years a team needed to get to 6 wins to be bowl eligible.

I know there are many more questions about this unusual college football season, but these are some to ponder as we wait for a final decision from BIG leadership.

It was 6 wins because of the quantity of games that were played by a given team.  the actual requirement is 50% or more so a 8 game schedule would only require 4 wins.  Now that may work for the bowls however the CFP will probably give the advantage to a team that has played more games with 0 or 1 loss.

Speaking of adjusting big ten schedules, what if Minnesota cancels our game? Any chance in hell we try to play Ohio State instead of Indiana? I bet Ohio State would rather play us. Not to mention if this team were to sneak out a win what that could do to this program and these kids moving forward. Even playing them in a close fought game could be great for the future. Just dreaming over here.....

It’s fun thought. Why not dream? Just don’t be angry if it doesn’t work out.

It would be interesting at this point because there are only a couple days of prep left.  At one time the thinking was if Minnesota cancelled they would shift Ohio State to play Maryland (game got cancelled earlier this year) and we play Rutgers (who is supposed to play Maryland).  At this point they'd probably just make us play Ohio State.
