People losing their jobs, especially celebrities, because of political comments isn't censorship.  It's business.

Still, not censorship.  If you think they tried to “censor” him, sounds like the public ended up “censoring” Netflix’s decision to cancel his special.

Are you upset about that?  Or are you okay since the “censorship” agreed with your beliefs?

These are silly questions, because we all know it’s not censorship.  It’s business decisions.

There was a group of folks that Chappelle offended with his show. They tried to push Netflix to cancel his show. Netflix decided it was a money maker and did not cancel his show. Good for them. If people stopped watching his show they would cancel it. Sort of like Samantha B.

First Avenue in Minneapolis cancelled his show just hours before kick off. They gave in to the protests and decided to lose the money on what was probably a sold out show. I suspect none of the protestors had purchased tickets anyway, so they managed to ruin the evening of the fans who wanted to see him.

Would you like to shift gears to examples from universities that have canceled various speakers that some students were upset about? That sort of takes the money issue out of it.

I don't deny any of that, no one does.

But why do we put things like this in a thread about "censorship"?

edit:  not giving someone a platform because they don't want to deal with the drama surrounding an event/issue isn't censorship.

The original post was about FIRE. BRB responded with a comment about comedians and I said "ask Dave Chappelle". That's how the shift to comedians happened.

"I hear people say this about comedians. It’s not that long ago when comedians on tv couldn’t even say a swear word."

However, groups of people trying to stop others from expressing views they disagree with is censorship to me, especially if it's accomplished through intimidation. Maybe the vast majority of  First Avenue shows are for liberal clients and they decided it was better to sacrifice one show than future business.

No idea if this is true but it popped up on the news feed. It's almost like Google or MSN is monitoring Huskerboard conversations. :D

Here is one. I guess we will see if the professor ultimately  gets replaced. If you simply believe and state their are only two sexes watch out.

On Sept. 7, according to the Bangor Daily News, education professor Christy Hammer allegedly said that only two biological sexes exist during a "Creating a Positive Learning Environment" class, which caused an uproar with graduate students in her class.

The report states that a heated discussion began over gender identity, and only one student in the class agreed with the professor. Most others in the class stated that a spectrum exists for gender and biological sex.

On Sept. 14, Elizabeth Leibiger, who is non-binary and was absent on Sept. 7, brought up the discussion again. When she got an answer from the professor, stating that only two sexes exist, Leibiger felt "under personal attack."

The facilitated restorative justice meeting was conducted, but students told the news outlet that Hammer still didn't budge, standing firm in her position that only the male and female sex designations exist.

In total, according to the report, almost two dozen graduate students in the class demanded that the university replace Hammer. They believe that the professor is transphobic, according to the report.

Reportedly 1,806 people signed a petition stating that the university "must support Professor Christy Hammer and Biological Fact."

"A university that cannot teach facts because students find them too hard to handle is useless as an educational institution. We the undersigned ask USM President Jacqueline Edmondson, Interim Provost Adam Tuchinsky and Chair of the Teacher Education Department Flynn Ross to stand firmly behind Professor Hammer and issue a public statement to the effect that she will neither be replaced nor required to stop stating the fact that sex in humans is binary," the petition states.

They didn't replace or fire her.

Edit.  Should be noted that this was a graduate level course for educators.  And here is the actual article from the Bangor Daily News vs. The New York Post and other right leaning publications that have tried to run with this as a major story.  https://www.bangordailynews.com/2022/10/03/news/portland/usm-wont-replace-professor-2-sexes/

I'm old enough to remember the argument that Gender and Sex were different, and thus it's possible to identify with any Gender one wishes - it is a social construct. Biological sex is concrete: barring extreme genetic mutation, one is either Male (XY) or Female (XX).

Liberals tripping over themselves to one-up each other into arguing that biological sex exists on a spectrum is monumentally stupid.

Honest questions for you, @nic: Do you really see discussions about gender identity and transphobia as a censorship/cancel culture issue? Are you prepared and/or curious to have a nuanced dialogue about these issues?

Because the issues raised in this article relate to the social and scientific dynamics of sex and gender, the role of these topics in an academic setting, the safety of students, and yes, academic freedom and censorship. There is a lot to unpack here, but to say "If you simply believe and state their are only two sexes watch out" and chalk it up to censorship is intellectually lazy and ignores what is really happening in this particular situation. It probably doesn't even belong in this thread. But if you really want to discuss, please say so.
