Biden's America

There's a lot of sunshine pumping and spin in these tweets... Total jobs are just now getting back to pre-pandemic levels and the number has been increasing since it bottomed out in 2020, obviously before Biden took office. Unemployment is following the inverse patter and is also just now at pre-pandemic levels. Gas prices are falling from all time highs... But when adjusted for inflation we are probably still above the long term average price for a gallon of gas. I don't expect gas to ever be where it was in 2020 or 2019 again, and I don't blame Biden for the increase, but pointing out falling prices that are still above the historical average is comical.

Don't get me wrong, these are all positive things, but they should be expected at this point if our economy is healthy.

Sort of. It's a difficult balancing act. The recovery after 2008 took around 5.5 years to recover all the lost jobs from that recession, this recovery was over twice as fast. So, yes, the jobs report showing mostly recovered jobs, it's still a victory to do it this quickly.

There are valid concerns that inflation is entrenched - it seems likely that inflation will fall to 4% or so late next year, but it will likely stay elevated above 3.5% for awhile... like the rest of the decade.  However, this is a worldwide problem. Not sure Biden or any President can do much about it.

Also, technically the unemployment rate is 3.46%, a record low. The official print is rounded up. It has never been easier to find a job in this country.

Now, unfortunately our Republican friends are going to be transfixed by the poetic words of Viktor Orban to notice.

Well said DSL.  Given the context of Biden's Presidency or being elected right in the middle of the ongoing global upheaval that is Covid-19 as the writer said who I quoted previously his achievements have been nothing short of extraordinary.

The unemployment rate, it's great, but I don't think it's all that amazing. Most of the jobs lost were were ones would come back as soon as the industries started operating again. This was vastly different than the recession.

Now his international diplomacy? That deserves rave reviews. What he pulled off with NATO and the international community for Ukraine is nothing sort of amazing. But we need to find a way to get Russia out of Ukraine and stop the destruction and death. The job isn't done.

Also...

Thanks for reminding me of that old tune! I've been making a playlist of the songs my dad had on his custom cassette tapes when we would drive out to Western Nebraska. This was one I missed.

I agree but have mixed feelings. It’s quite the accomplishment to see these trends reverse. Poor management and we could still be in much worse shape. But when you’re already at the bottom of the barrel, most all changes are going to be for the better. Unfortunately all Presidents do this, take credit for things they may have had minimal effect on. The economy will pretty much do what the economy wants to do. The exceptions to that would be when Presidents do or don’t do things to help the exterior factors or in Trump’s case when they do things to make them worse, like refusing to aid in reducing the spread of a pandemic. So anyway I’ll give Joe credit for doing what he could to help but all those glorious numbers are more a result of where we were and aren’t all directly attributable to things this admin did.

Very true.  Many things in the economy were going to happen no matter who was President.  Gas prices spiked because of many things related to the pandemic.  Unemployment dropped so low, mainly because of the pandemic and how many people are now retired and out of the workforce.  Demand for goods spiked, because people still had jobs but couldn't spend money on vacations, eating out...etc.

Many things around us are happening still as reactions from the pandemic.  But, people are trying to blame/give credit to whomever is in office at the time.

Don't forget the opposition party is having an identity crisis consisting of "is Democracy good?" or "should we undermine the constitution to remain in power perpetually?" and if white nationalist talking points should be a feature of their political platform or if it should remain just underneath the surface like it has been for decades. COVID, climate change, and inflation are not the only threats America is facing. The Republican Party has emerged as the most serious threat to the country, and I do not mean that hyperbolicly.

Accomplishing all this while half the country are brainwashed feral MAGA-heads is no small feat.

Yeah, this has been a very, very interesting week in Joe Binden's America.  Additionally:

• Joe Manchin and Chuck Shumer not only operate a cagey burn on Mitch McConnell and the GOP, they pass genuinely actionable climate change and tax enforcement legislation.

• The GOP's "revenge" punishes veterans and exposes Republican leaders as blatant liars. For the first time in recent memory, they actually exhibit shame.

• Kristen Sinema wakes up and agrees to be a better Democrat.

• The CHIP bill gets passed. Debate it on its merits, but it's a big bill that bodes well for the American economy, and the Democrats made it happen.

• Kansas shocks conservative America by going into anonymous polling booths and sending a landslide signal that the "states rights" argument against abortion may not even play in Red States.

• Alex Jones is exposed and embarrassed in a court of law for the world to see. No small or singular thing: lying rightwing profiteers and their lawyers may have just seen the writing on the wall. As have other prosecutors.

• Gas prices continue to drop. Just for fun.

That's a lot to happen in just a few days.

They killed the next leader of Al Qaeda and they've also nominated a record number of judges to courts.
