As horrible as a million deaths sound, I don't believe it significantly shifted the metrics of anything. As mentioned, it's the Millennials and Gen Z who are expected to experience the first decline in life expectancy in a century. 

 

Not only are there tons of Baby Boomers living longer, they want to be more active than their hips, backs, shoulders, and knees were ever designed for. Medicare is going to be on the hook for really expensive surgeries for years. 

 

We really need some non-ideological cooperation on this. The conservative desire to dismantle Social Security typically has more to do with a fervent dislike of the Federal government holding and distributing money for any purpose, rather than concern for its long-term health. The Bush administration made a half-hearted play for privatizing Social Security during his second term, but imagine if the SS coffers had been turned over to the stock market just in time for the 2008 crash. There might well be a reasonable compromise. But the best possible solution for protecting Social Security is absolutely guaranteed to make a lot of people unhappy.
