New AD or Head Coach

Shows the integrity of TO. Not a man to hold a grudge and a mentor to all

Genuine Question:

Have you ever considered what our beloved program would currently look like if TO would have done what he should have done and that is, taking over as the AD when Coach D was retired. Solich likely remains, Bo stays as a DC along with the other young coaches Solich brought in. Callahan/Cosgrove never arrive. The program likely remains consistent and in at least a couple more conference championship games. We likely never leave the Big 12. We likely remain very relevant in the sport as a whole and well.. Solich likely retires, takes over as AD and Frost arrives with a solid foundation that stretches over a 40 year span.

Odd so many forget that much of our current environment is a direct correlation to a decision (right or wrong) made by a man we hold so dear!

You might be on the right path, but I don't think it plays out this way.  First of all, there's not a snowballs chance Bo would have stayed for the long haul under Solich as DC.  He had aspirations of being a HC all along.  If Solich were to retire here, I'd say it's a lot more likely that either Turner Gill or Bo replaces Solich after he retired as long as Solich didn't stay too long because Bo more than likely bolts by 2010 or before.  I'm not sure about currently being in the Big 12 either.  If memory serves me right, TO was the AD when we joined the B1G.  I'm guessing no matter what we're still in the B1G.

Lots of kinds of bad head coaches.  Some are bad because they can't lead at the most critical times, they might delegate to crappy coordinators who are his friends, and can't understand why things are failing.  Some are bad because they can't adapt.  Some because they're past their prime.  Some because they have no imagination and coach by rote.  Some because they're fine at a lower level but have been promoted or hired to a level beyond their competence (The Peter Principle).

When I see Scott Frost's record, his career record, I see a bit of that Peter Principle;  he was fine and very good as an OC, etc.  And as a head coach in a weaker league.

I think about Alabama.  Suppose the Huskers had every single starter that Alabama has.  Would Scott Frost be able to produce, game after game, season after season, what Nick Saban produces?  If so, he's just like Nick Saban but hasn't got the right players.  If not, he's The Peter Principle personified;  he's been handed a program in a league that he's not capable of helming to relevancy, let alone championships.

Maybe time will tell.  I do have trouble seeing him as a great or even very good coach in the Big Ten, no matter the players brought in.

I am going to say no.  Frost would need to have a staff like Saban's for us to have success like that.   Saban surrounds himself with great assistants, some have had prior HC experience and others are from teams that have been winners in the last 10 years.  He currently has 4 analysts that were HCs also.  You might have heard of them - Butch Jones, Major Applewhite, Charlie Strong and Mike Stoops.

I think we have the talent except at QB to be a good team, we just don't have the coaching.

Kind of debatable about the talent except for QB.  ;)  But I agree with the spirit of what you're saying.  We do have spark here and there on O and D.. but not that amazing championship quality on those lines and in that backfield.  What would Frost and crew do with those Alabama guys?

So.. I try to picture Scott Frost and crew down there in Tusc and I do not see much at all near the fine, almost machine like persona and trophies.  I just see a coaching staff squandering talent, even in practice.   They were fine in the AAC.

I will go even further then the coaching staff and say that we are VERY lacking in the S&C department.   I am not a fan of Duval and his idea that we need to go back to the 90's style S&C.

Watching the Bama/Floida game last night, my son was amazed at Alabama's Oline with how well they moved at their size.  Bama went and hired Matt Rhea from Indiana after Scott Cochran left to go coach TE's at Georgia.  Rhea is one of the big reasons for Indiana's turn around last year and their success this year.

I will add this also because I am sure someone will ask who we should hire then.  My pick would be Jerry Schmidt,  he is the head man for Texas A&M and is one of the best in the nation.  A cool bonus with him is he was born and raised in Nebraska, graduated from UNL and worked with TO and Epley while getting his degree.  His coaching stops speak for themselves and to the level of success he has had.
