What is the future of the Republican Party?

I honestly thought the California recall was going to hurt Newsom, even if he managed to stay in office. At first there was very little enthusiasm among Dems rushing to his defense, and the relative ease of staging a recall where a low-budget Republican could win with vastly fewer votes looked like a strategy that Republicans could use anywhere, anytime to counter their lower registration numbers.

But now the post-recall narrative is that Newsom's landslide win actually puts him in a better place for reelection in 2022, with a fresh campaign chest and ground game already up and running. Republicans totally failed to seize the enthusiasm gap, or entice California independents and moderates, by elevating a fire-breathing member of the Trump circus, Larry Elder, rather than a legitimate candidate like the ex-mayor of San Diego. The partisan boondoggle cost taxpayers $275 million.

This is officially Trump's party. It appears to have a ceiling of around 38%, a number that will lose them elections but is still shocking and powerful.
