Insurrection fallout

Recommended Posts

The press, as usual, is focusing on the wrong thing and bungling the message from Hutchinson's testimony.

Orange Man Bad is alleged to have known his supporters were armed with guns, knives, spears, pepper spray, etc. and not only did he not call in the National Guard or request to have the police reinforced or ANY OTHER RATIONAL THING, he instigated their march on the Capitol.

It is irrelevant that he may have tried to grab a steering wheel or thrown a plate. Unfortunately, versions of these two allegations are making the rounds, while the above is being relegated to a back story.

Orange Man Bad won't be prosecuted for whatever happened in the dining room or in the vehicle. He'll be prosecuted for instigating a violent attack on Congress in an attempted coup.

Leave it to America's press to focus on the salacious aspects of Hutchinson's testimony. Morons.

I think all the above are important.  What you key on is very important in that it shows that he actually knew the mob was armed, didn't want them disarmed and told them to go to the capital.  What the car and dining room scenes show is his attitude and mental state around that day.  It also shows what he really thought should be done and that's for the mob to hang Mike Pence.  That's specifically why he sent the tweet he did that day after he knew the mob had breached the capital.  The same mob that he KNEW was armed.

The revelation that Trump had every intention of leading the mob himself endears himself to the mob more than ever. I had assumed Trump was all too happy to incite then flee to safety. If you're already on board with the Big Lie, or simply believe the lie was worth it to prevent a socialist takeover, Trump shouting "I'm the f#&%ing President, take me to the Capitol!" and attempting to physically over-rule his own security detail makes him sound even more heroic to folks already so inclined. Hutchinson's revelations are about GOP insiders recognizing a line being crossed, but too many in the voting public see nothing wrong in Donald Trump's actions. They eat ketchup for lunch, too.

But wow.....it sounds like Donald Trump envisioned a scenario where he would enter the Congressional chamber himself that day, his angry mob behind him.

Seriously, how would that have played out?

There's really no ambiguity in the illegality of what Donald Trump was trying to do using the powers of the presidency.

If it's not prosecuted, there's really no point in America anymore.

I was thinking last night:  I was a big fan of the show "24" when it was on TV.  I couldn't wait for the next episode of 24 to see what Jack would do next.  Well these hearing are shaping up as having that same 'cliff hanging' suspense to them.  How do you top Cassidy's performance yesterday?  Yet Liz Cheney said that  her testimony was to set up testimony that will follow.  WOW.

The other thing: The structure,. the design, the execution of these hearings is like no other hearing before them.  They are methodically building an air tight case against Trump and his co-conspirators.  Inch by inch, detail by detail the noose is being tightened.  If I was one of the people in the inner circle, I'd be cooperating today because I see the tidal wave coming.

The other brilliant strategy is that they are using republicans (perhaps 100%) to condemn the action of a republican president.  They don't have a bunch of   never trumpers doing it either - most if not all were supporters or worked under him at one time.

Finally, the Democrats gave up the 'Glory" to make Liz Cheney the Congressional star of the hearings.  This was a smart move to have her, as the GOP lead, to drive home most of the important points and delivering very effective opening and closing remarks.  So it becomes apparent that this isn't a Democratic witch hunt but a serious bipartisan legal inquiry.

Newsome vs Desantis would really be interesting.  Looking at that from a gambling point of view, I think it would be an "even" line on who would win that.

I would guess Desantis would have to pick a running mate from a big state, not super far right and with little/no Trump affiliation,  and I think Newsome would have to pick someone that is not super insane left.

I can't imagine the D's would get behind Newsom nationally.  He faced a recall in the most liberal state in the Union.  He carries a lot of baggage that I don't think would resonate well with many D's across the country.  Whether some of the baggage is fair or not, it has happened under his watch.  California has lost population under his watch.  It's the first time in a very long time.

The D's bench is pretty thin.  My guess is either Biden or Hillary in 24'.

Tim Ryan, Mayor Pete, Elizabeth Warren, Amy Klobuchar, Roy Cooper, Newsom, Sherrod Brown... There are a lot of Dem candidates if Biden doesn't/can't run.

A prosecution isn't supposed to call a witness unless they know how they will answer every question.

I'm guessing they believe Ginni Thomas is enough of a trainwreck that she will incriminate others by being either an utterly bats#!t denialist, or the latest to recoil and throw others under the bus.

Gonna take a wild guess that Ginni would not have been considered influential enough to grill without Clarence Thomas suddenly the fulcrum of a Constitutional battle on another front. Fair or not, you cannot listen to her and believe her husband should be making decisions that involve American lives.

The rule of thumb is that prosecutors shouldn't ask a question the prosecutor doesn't know the answer to.

Doesn't matter what the witness says if the prosecutor has the receipts.

Funny how you left Harris off of the list.  Not funny at you, but funny how she has left so little impact that she is forgotten when we (me included)  think of likely options if Uncle Joe doesn't run.
