Political Hyprocrisy & a Place to Park Your Whataboutism

Recommended Posts

Threads get derailed with Whataboutism and charges of Hypocrisy all day long.  As a result the core of the thread issue is bypassed, excused and the discussion digresses into finger pointing.

To me, whataboutism, used as a defense, is childish and only points the finger at the insecurity of the poster who argues "Well what about Hillary?" says a Trump supporter to get the heat off of Trump  or "What about Trump" says the Hillary supporter trying to get the heat off of Hillary.  These are deflections and not arguments, they are :movegoalpost::goalposts:dances away from the argument when one doesn't have an argument or the facts to support their argument.

So, if you see hypocrisy - then post it here.  Get it off your chest.  If you want to point the political finger (not the middle one -don't  break HB rules of conduct!) - then do it here.

These are courtesy of @RedDenver -  he posted else where today.    For the benefit of @Archy1221 and @Notre Dame Joe  I"ve added an OPED from the NY Post   below that supports some of the hypocrisy they were trying to point out on

another thread.

What a difference a week makes. On Wednesday, we discovered that House Democrats actually support police. They are against mob violence. They believe in law and order. They believe in harsh punishment for rule breakers. They believe in accountability.

They care deeply about civility. They believe words matter. They abhor intemperate rhetoric. They are against coarse language. Fancy that.

They believe in a peaceful transition of power, at least this time, as opposed to 2016. They believe in the Electoral College. They believe in the legitimacy of the people’s vote.

They believe in walls, at least when it comes to protecting their own place of work. They even believe in bringing in the National Guard to quell civil unrest, at least when it comes to preserving their own peace.

They believe in guns, at least when their own safety is at risk.

Prime example of political hypocrisy - Ted Cruz - slams others for vacationing during crisis but slithers way from Texas during winter energy crisis

This past December, Cruz attacked Austin Mayor Steve Adler for going to Cabo, Mexico, during the coronavirus pandemic.
"Hypocrites. Complete and utter hypocrites. And don't forget @MayorAdler who took a private jet with eight people to Cabo and WHILE IN CABO recorded a video telling Austinites to 'stay home if you can...this is not the time to relax,'" tweeted Cruz in December.

Cruz has attacked public officials for vacationing or golfing during times of crisis and argued that it showed those officials were not paying attention.
Cruz said in 2017 then-New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie "should go back to the beach," referencing the outrage surrounding the governor's trip to a closed state beach with his family while the state's government was shut down.
Cruz was responding to criticism and charges of hypocrisy from Christie after his request for federal aid for Texas in response to Hurricane Harvey. Cruz had opposed an aid package in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, which largely affected the northeast.
In a speech in 2015, Cruz said "if the only terrorists attacked a golf course, that might actually get the White House's attention. Holy cow, this is serious!"
In 2014, Cruz attacked then-President Barack Obama for attending a fundraiser during a crisis at the border in Texas and said the President spent too much time on the golf course.
"I think the President should actually stand up and do his job as commander-in-chief, should spend less time on the golf course and more time doing the job to which he was elected," Cruz told reporters in Iowa in August 2014, when asked about the President vacationing in Martha's Vineyard.
A month earlier, during an appearance on Fox News in July, Cruz called Obama an "absentee president," who was "not focused on the people who are hurting."
"He's going to two major fundraisers where he wants to be with wealthy Democratic donors, but apparently, he doesn't have time to actually go and see the border, he doesn't have time to see the children who are suffering because of his failed policies," Cruz said. "Earlier, he was playing pool. Apparently playing a game of pool is a higher priority for this President than it would be to go and see the humanitarian crisis he's created.

How about AOC chastising Texas for not being green enough while they are literally in a bad situation, even though roughly 1/3 of Texas is green.

This is inaccurate. The majority of Texas's problems are coming from not spending the money to winterize their energy production and distribution systems, which are primarily fossil fuel based.

The bitingly cold temperatures have caused major problems across the energy sector in Texas.

Wind turbines froze, as well as vital equipment at gas wells and in the nuclear industry.

But because gas and other non-renewable energies contribute far more to the grid than wind power, particularly in winter, these shortages had a far greater impact on the system.

So when critics pointed to a loss of nearly half of Texas's wind-energy capacity as a result of frozen turbines, they failed to point out double that amount was being lost from gas and other non-renewable supplies such as coal and nuclear.

The problem of not winterizing goes back to at least 1989 and almost the exact same thing as is happening this week happened in 2011. This isn't an issue of renewable vs fossil fuels, but the power companies putting profit over reliability and the government failing to regulate those power companies:

Texas Was Warned a Decade Ago Its Grid Was Unready for Cold

Precautions should be taken regardless of how rare a harsh winter is.  But chastising people in a bad situation is something certain politicians would get ousted for.  Not her.

I honestly don't understand what you're even talking about. Your own link says that the wind was a magnitude smaller than the natural gas issues and that the natural gas plants should have been winterized. AOC is criticizing the governor for not having been prepared despite having this same thing happen in the past. What's the issue?

IMO there are three routine problems with whataboutisms:

1) They too often lack authenticity, meaning the person inserting it does so in a sarcastic and spiteful manner, not necessarily to have an honest conversation, but to just point out the hypocrisy of the other person's argument

2) It's not always meant to be a part of a solution but a part of the problem

3) It's too often an avoidance tactic in order to evade a question or issue

3 million customers without power and she used it as an opportunity to be snide abour her green new deal.  It's hypocritical on a couple levels to me.

Can you provide what she said that was hypocritical? All I can find is her criticizing the governor of Texas, which seems pretty appropriate.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Tuesday offered scathing criticism of Texas Gov. Greg Abbott after he blamed winter-storm power outages on the Green New Deal and renewable energy sources.

"I go offline a few days and return to a GOP Gov blaming policies he hasn't even implemented for his own failures. Gov. Abbott doesn't seem to have a grasp on his state, so here's a reminder: Texas runs 80-90% on fossil fuels. The real 'deadly deal' is his failed leadership," the New York Democrat tweeted.

Ocasio-Cortez in a separate tweet said Abbott "needs to get off TV pointing fingers & start helping people"

"After that, he needs to read a book on his own state's energy supply," she added.
