There was no $150 billion payout from the U.S. treasury. The money he refers to represents Iranian assets held abroad that were frozen until the deal was reached and Tehran was allowed to access its funds.

The payout of about $1.8 billion is a separate matter. That dates to the 1970s, when Iran paid the U.S. $400 million for military equipment that was never delivered because the government was overthrown and diplomatic relations ruptured.

That left people, businesses and governments in each country indebted to partners in the other, and these complex claims took decades to sort out in tribunals and arbitration. For its part, Iran paid settlements of more than $2.5 billion to U.S. citizens and businesses.

The day after the nuclear deal was implemented, the U.S. and Iran announced they had settled the claim over the 1970s military equipment order, with the U.S. agreeing to pay the $400 million principal along with about $1.3 billion in interest. The $400 million was paid in cash and flown to Tehran on a cargo plane, which gave rise to Trump’s dramatic accounts of money stuffed in barrels or boxes and delivered in the dead of night. The arrangement provided for the interest to be paid later, not crammed into containers.

I fully understand where the money originated.

We seize United States criminals property and cash too.   We also freeze the bank accounts of overseas criminals. I’m sure those criminals hate us too.

Could you help me understand how we are seizing the food and medicine of Iranian citizens?  I haven’t heard that before.  Thanks in advance.

So seizing was the wrong word for the

medicine. I should have said US sanctions are making it more difficult for them to get medicine in the country.

Then why the comment "I wonder how many pallets of cash it would take this time?"

Does the US still owe them money?

Because we didn’t really need to give them that money at that time especially considering who controls the country.   We wouldn’t give the seized assets of a mafia crime family back to them 40 yrs later if they promised to go legit.

Thanks for the link.

Sanctions are Definitely way different than seizing.  It’s an unfortunate consequence of having a rogue regimen in charge of a nation.  Innocent people eventually suffer. Hopefully they rise up and revolt against their leaders.

The money wasn't seized.  It was owed to Iran and that deal was upheld by arbitrators. Iran also gave money back to the US over the years.  The 400mil was a partial payment of an agreed upon value that potentially saved the US billions if they would have continued to avoid holding up their end of the negotiations.

All the private claims had been resolved each way and after 40 years why did the Obama administration all of sudden think the arbitrators were gonna say give Iran 10 billion?

“All told, Tehran was asking The Hague arbitrators (comprising equal numbers of U.S., Iranian and neutral judges) for $10 billion. Fearing they might actually be awarded that much, or something like it, the Obama administration negotiated privately with Tehran, which agreed to settle for $1.7 billion. The $400 million stacked on pallets was the first installment.”

Thx for the link.  I get what they are saying, but the whole article and the last one is basically a “take out word for it” article in regards to that the Haugue arbiters were just about to award $4 billion to Iran after 35 years of dispute.
And if that’s indeed the actual case, Iranian negotiators would also have known this so why settle for less than half that amount?  Seems like $3 billion would have been a bare minimum point for a negotiator worth a darn if those points in the article were correct.

Then why do Republicans act like the US paid Iran the money?

This is such a made up stupid outrage by republicans. People who keep brining it up just look like party hacks.
