The nomination actually does mean more than squat.   Very very very few SCOTUS nominees get rejected.

Senate is in charge of the issue ONCE a person is actually nominated, not before.

That very very very few is very very very subjective depending on what party the President is, who he nominated and who was controlling the senate at the time. Things that may have been commonplace pre Bush 2 don’t really apply anymore. If you haven’t noticed things have been overtly partisan for awhile now.

And thanks for going all captain obvious with your last sentence….like you’re teaching us something

This is very true.  Everyone but Garland has been pushed through, but the vote totals have been crazy close compared to what they used to be.

The Senate is more preferable than the House. Mostly because Democrats can keep nominating judges, even potentially any SCOTUS openings.

Of course it would've been best to keep both, but in a midterm environment holding onto any chamber is practically unheard of.

What I meant was keeping the House was preferable to gaining a Senate seat but I was probably stating the obvious.

You’re ignoring the negotiation aspect of things. The president discusses the judges with Senators before nominating them to make sure they have the votes. Especially in times like these where they’re barely getting approved. They don’t just come up with a name and hope the Senators like the person.

I’m literally the one who brought this up :dunno

Now if those two want to compromise on judge pics then fine but it’s the presidents choice to nominate.

The functional point is, if the Pres is Dem and the senate Rep, the President won’t really have a choice of who he wants to nominate. He’ll have to nominate a lesser evil that stands a chance.

Technically he nominates them but effectively it is determined by the senate. You know this and we all know this.

Still waiting on that red wave. Whos the guy who said republicans would hold the senate, house and presidency for the next decade? Hows that working out. Thank you young people! Republicans are done unless they get young people on their side and they wont, which is great for America!
