Athlon: #36 Minnesota Golden Gophers Preview and Prediction

The offense needs to make small-step improvements, the defense needs to make big strides and special teams must make leaps for Minnesota to return to contention in 2021. With experience at nearly every position and reinforcements in the form of transfers, Minnesota will be gunning for the top spot in the Big Ten West. "We are already creating that internal expectation and that internal pressure," Fleck says. "Because I really like this football team."

CollegeFootballNews: Minnesota Golden Gophers 2021 Preview

There’s no Penn State, Michigan, or Michigan State, and the biggest games against Ohio State and Wisconsin are at home – that’s about as much as can be reasonably asked for in the Big Ten. However, Minnesota has a massive Iowa problem – losing six straight in the series – and that’s on the road. Going to Northwestern is rough, and facing Indiana on the road between Iowa and Wisconsin is a disastrous scheduling quirk. Throw in the road dates against Colorado and Purdue, and again, it’s not going to be easy.

But Minnesota will keep beating almost all of the teams it’s supposed to, it’ll manage to get by one team it probably shouldn’t beat, and Fleck will make it to a third bowl in his last four seasons. It won’t be a corner-turning season, but everything will keep moving along.

The Athletic: After a trying 2020 on and off the field, Minnesota returns an experienced roster with something to prove

With his campus located only a handful of miles from where George Floyd was murdered and COVID-19 battering his squad throughout the fall of 2020, Minnesota coach P.J. Fleck had to deal with more than just player departures from an 11-win team in 2019.

Every day brought new questions, difficult answers and uncertainty in all aspects of football and life, from wondering if the Gophers even would play to whether it mattered anyway. Amid those challenges, that Minnesota managed a 3-4 record with two overtime losses taught Fleck that his team’s character and resiliency was beyond reproach.

Miami of Ohio could have actually had this upset last week against the Gophers if their linebackers had maintained good run fit discipline.

Miami stayed in the game by throwing 50/50 balls down the field. Maybe a bit lucky there in some respects.

Minnesota's offensive playbook is solid. They hit you on stretch run plays and then Morgan is always good for some bullets on medium length passes to mix it up.

Very interested in their game against Colorado this week. Line initially opened Minnesota -3 but quickly flipped to Colorado, and now looks like a pick’em.

Two good running teams that can’t throw. Colorado’s front 7 is good but Minnesota’s OLine is monstrous. Should be a good matchup there. Would say take the under as I don’t see either team all of a sudden learning how to throw the ball.
