Ya know, I did not gamble at all on football between 1998 and the 2020 season. Nada. I did quite a bit prior between 1981 and 1997. I had such a good year in 97 that I decided it would never get better so I quit. Unfortunately I forgot some of the lessons I learned and had to relearn them this year.

Football is fun when unexpected and outlier things happen. Gambling? Not so much.

How did your betting process work back then?

I had "a guy" Buzz and Dudley then later Weekly Trader.

Similar set up, call in, they answer and "record" the call, you tell them your #...I think I was 168, and put your wagers in...On Saturday I think they took calls from 9am until like 7pm.

I had a guy in my hometown who I would call in the bets to. He booked some of it himself but would also lay some off with mob (I assume) guys in KC.

I would collect all the bets from the guys in my frat and relay those to him. I fell into that when a guy a few years older was graduating and moving on. The guy I called was pretty cool….he let me balance everything I could and keep the juice. I never could figure out why he let me keep the 10% on losses but it was a good deal. I heard that one night at a bar back home, two guys walked in and escorted him out and drove him to Kansas City. When he got back he sold his house and business and it was over. Thinking he got in too deep with the wrong guys.

not bad. the first 3 to share how they did this week went a combined 1-8. i think we all should take georgia every week until they get to the bama matchup.

Georgia didn't cover this week.

I've been riding them hard all year but 38 is a lot of points to lay.

It's so funny how we used to bet with a bookie back in the day.  I remember my bookies would only take action for a few hours a day.  How dare they demand work/life balance!  Then things shifted online and you had a dedicated account number.  It's been a while since I bet with a street bookie.  Being able to bet on credit is certainly convenient and if I didn't live so close to IA I might consider it.  But only being 10 minutes away and being guaranteed to get paid out is appealing.  I've gotten stiffed a couple of times on large payouts and there isn't much you can do in terms of recourse.  I ain't doing 10 years in jail on assault charges lol.

I can still remember getting "the sheet" in the mail on like Wednesday and starting to study it to find my locks.

That seems way better than... well I recall a little Italian restaurant.  I would ask for Giuseppe.  And go to the back room.

"You tink the Irish are gonna win?"

(me) -Uh, no sir I'm leaning on the Hurricanes

"You tink the Canes are gonna win?"

(me) -Uh, who should I pick then?

"Take the under, unless you like the over"

Let's just say, if they didn't have the best linguini with clam sauce I would never go back every week lol...  and pay up
