Who do we hire?

Recommended Posts

Last week I said that regardless of the score, I just wanted to see good fundamental football and no unforced errors.

The good news is that once again, I avoided the game entirely and managed to get a quick recap through articles and post-game lowlights.  While losing to IL might seem to be the worst thing, it was doing so with fumbles, botched returns, no rushing attack and poor pass protection.  All elements that point to lack of discipline and poor coaching.

I said last month that this game would be pivotal in whether or not we make a bowl this year, and I stand by that.

Given this reality, and knowing that Coach Frost will get 5 years, I would encourage our fans to give Coach Frost a Thank You Farewell Tour of sorts in the coming weeks.  It is time to accept the reality that this experiment will not work and that yet another disruptive transition is on the horizon.  Great player and ambassador for the school and we should thank him and wish him well.

Finally, all those fans not in attendance for games would do themselves a huge favor by limiting their game watching / analysis time.  Only a masochist would enjoy watching these debacles week after week.  The coaching staff will be here for 5 years so enough talk of new coaches and let's also end the talk of progress and patience.  In Year 4, progress, or lack thereof should be obvious.

What Nebraska needs to is do is to stop offering the coaching job to "flashes in the pan" coaches like Frost. And Riley and Pelini were not the best our there when hiring them. Y'all need to go after the best coach out there and offer them a generous contract. My suggestion is to go after someone like Brent Venables. Yes, he says that he wants to stay at Clemson, but something in me tells me that he would like to be the head coach somewhere and what better person build the blackshirts back up than him? And then to hire the best OC out there and start completely from scratch. Plus he's a Big 12 guy and knows recruiting in the Midwest and now has connections on the east coast. Nebraska can be great again and I think that a Venables type coach is the answer. What do y'all think?

Chadwell - Love his shotgun triple option looks, creative/different offense. Would it work in the B1G? Hard to say. It'll be interesting to see how things go this year and maybe next as he has to replace skill athletes. They beat a legit BYU squad last year.

Jeff Monken - We all know why he would be a good fit, as much as people want to leave the 'traditional' option game behind. We aren't going to out-recruit Ohio State, Penn State, Michigan, etc for the best QB and WR recruits needed to run a pro/spread offense. We NEED to be different. Given the fact that he's at Army right now, it's a good bet he'd run a tight ship.

Matt Entz - The NDSU record and their results speak for themselves.

Matt Campbell - Very low probability of leaving Ames for Lincoln. If he leaves, it will probably be for the NFL.

Matt Rhule - If things don't work out in Carolina, maybe Lincoln would be a good fit. He made Temple a winner, and then turned Baylor around.

Scott Frost - Give him more time.

NO to Bill O'Brien. I've heard some BAD things about that guy. He would be Callahan 2.0.

IF Frost is fired i vote for Monken. I have no idea if it would work but it would create the most uproar and chaos.

Without a doubt, the top name on anyone's coaching list will be Hugh Freeze (Liberty).

Three questions result however; is he personally / professionally redeemed following his time at Liberty; second, will he be around at the end of 2022 and third, is NU prepared to trade institutional reputation for wins?

Freeze has certainly delivered results, but I am struggling with this part:

On July 20, 2017, Freeze resigned after Ole Miss officials learned that he had used a university-provided cell phone to place calls to an escort service in "a concerning pattern" that began shortly after he took the job in 2011.[11][12]

NCAA investigators later concluded that Freeze had cheated on 15 occasions by breaking recruiting rules and allowing students to play who had not maintained the required academic standing; they also determined that his predecessor, Nutt, had broken similar rules. This constituted one of the worst violations ever, and in 2019 the NCAA punished Ole Miss by stripping the team of 33 wins over six seasons, including seven from 2012, eight from 2014, and five from 2016. This changed Freeze's official record at Ole Miss from 39–25 over five seasons to 12–25. The NCAA also banned the team from postseason play for two years, stripped it of scholarships for four years, and placed it on three years of probation.[13] In 2019, the NCAA vacated 33 of the team's victories dating from 2010 to 2016 and levied a two-year ban on postseason play as punishment for recruiting and academic violations under both Houston Nutt and Freeze.[14][1

Anyone will leave for another coaching job if the price is right. Make him a contract he can't resist. If the right team and offer comes calling, he will leave. Why can't that be Nebraska?

Because it would take a ridiculous sum of money and no one wants to set a ridiculous bar that then sets the standard moving forward

More important, why did this deserve its own thread instead of just posting this in the "who we hire" thread?  Venables name is already littered across many posts there
