Who do we hire?

Now if a Nebraska own can’t get things going and even takes steps backwards, what next up and coming coach would want to come here?

let’s be real with where we actually are today. If we get rid of Frost, our selection pool is going to be assistance on teams like Purdue.

Coaches have to be narcissists to some degree by virtue of the job. Lots of coaches would come here, because they're convinced right or wrong that they can succeed.

We've showed with Frost and with Pelini that we aren't the same program that did Frank dirty - we've given coaches long leashes. The narrative of coaches not wanting to come because of unrealistic expectations is gone - Frost would have been fired before year 4 at any other program with his results.

If/when we need a new coach, I think we go the route of an up and coming established coordinator. Our last two hires (our worst two hires) were already head coaches. Pelini was not, and he was the best of all of them.

Maybe we don’t have the same expectations but that means this programs realistic ceiling has been exposed.

Nebraska is a very hard job.

This thread is about who do we hire to replace Scott Frost as head coach, not about whether or not Scott Frost will be replaced at the end of this season (or before?), but are we sure he's going to be replaced at the end of this season (or before?).

Reasons he may not be replaced:

- The season will be cut short by new COVID restrictions as the variant spreads.  It would be very unfair to have him lose his job having not played out the season.

- He gets 6 wins and a bowl game.  That could happen.

- Trev Alberts et al in the offices and those with the money understand that yet another coaching staff replacement is not just expensive but is also futile;  it's still Nebraska where we can't recruit the elites any more, and that things have changed, basically.

Coaching is a very hard job in general. The Nebraska job is easier now than it has been any time in modern history due to lowered expectations. Our ceiling is as high as any other successful non-blue blood schools that don't get top 10 recruiting classes (Wisconsin, Iowa, Oregon, etc.)

While I would love to get an elite hire, that may be difficult to do given how bad this program is. We really need somebody to at least get the program back to respectability first.

Agreed. I posted this in the game thread, but we need to do what Minnesota did—get a coach in (Kill) to stabilize the ship, fix leaks, and do enough improvement to get back to .500.

After a few years, they go into the sunset and we bring in a coach that can build off of the foundations given to them.

Craig Bohl would be a good candidate for the first part of this plan.

Frost beat Malzahn to earn UCF the undefeated season. Malzahn is now at UCF. Ironically I think most now would trade Frost back to UCF. Would we have interest in Malzahn? He may want to get back into the power conferences. He will run the ball and even option. Recruits for his system well.  No stranger to big games and rivalries. Wouldn’t this be ironic!

Matt Campbell.  Aims is a 3.5 hour drive from Lincoln.  When Frost gets fired, we will not be paying him a dime.  NU has enough evidence of 'breach of contract' with Frost to cut ties with him and never have to send him a single cent (will be tied up in the courts for a while and most likely settled for an anonymous nominal amount to end the lawyer fees).  We then can back up the money truck to Matt and offer him 6-7 million a year easy and I highly doubt he turns it down.  The Big 12 is going to soon lose its power conference standing and Matt Campbell will want to play in the big leagues.  The dude can coach up a very solid team.
