New Offensive Coordinator options?

I am not saying the final decision happens through an informal interview as it is important to make sure the chemistry is there, but much of the legwork can be done quickly through informal interviews.

At this point I am not sure why the 4 asssistants were fired before the season was over as it does not appear to have greatly accelerated the process to find replacements to help with recruiting. Now if Frost makes a slam dunk hire it will all be worth the wait, but if we end up with Harrell who has really been a lame duck since Helton was fired, it will not make sense to me.

Well.....Mickey Joseph was lame duck by your example and he's a damn good hire.

If Harrell does become the new OC, there are many things he brings to the table that are upgraded.  We are not completely changing scheme, so that's not a concern.  I think Harrell would eba better recruiter than Walters, Lubick or Verduzco

And perhaps someone like Harrell would be better at quarterback development than Verduzco ended up being for us?

The offense worked pretty well until it got to the red zone or into any critical point of a game. Plenty of individual choke jobs that have to fall at the feet of the head coach, the real OC, the guy calling the plays and choosing the personnel. The team just mimicked him once anything went wrong. In so many ways the offense was fine……except whenever it really mattered. Even remedial kicking and special teams play would’ve helped win about 4 more. The thing this team needs maybe more than an OC, OL improvement and special teams is a sports psychologist. No fear of failure is just something that’s said, not actually exhibited.

All those one score losses and crazy s#!t that prevented winning, I really have my doubts if Frost will ever be worth a s#!t again. He has to be a flinching basket case and I think the team picked up on that.

The offense scored well in the red zone until they had to rely on their kickers.

Here’s a fun comparison for you all. An article from 2014 with the top 15 OC’s in the country.

It’s only 7 years and things have changed drastically. I’ll admit that I was surprised to see Harrell on this list. Yes, it’s an opinion piece… but he’s clearly getting some respect nationally.

The OC is always an important hire but I would argue that ST and OL are just as important and maybe more so. OC’s can have way more success if ST doesn’t put them in deep holes and a good O line can do their jobs. If the new OC is also the OL coach and can recruit the guys we need and develop the ones we have it will go a long way to solving our problems. I think poor ST lost us three games this year, Oklahoma, Mich St and Iowa. Having a less than serviceable O line contributed to every game we lost. Not giving our QB time to find open receivers, not opening holes for our average running backs to gain short yardage first downs or red zone rushing tds.

Yes things change quickly in college football. Here is a list of the top 25 head coaches heading into the 2021 season.

It includes many good names including the 4 CFP coaches but it also has Orgeron and Mullen in the top 10 who are both out of jobs.

Head coaches ... yes.  Most of the big ones are all done through agents.

Assistants?  I don't think so.  They are not being hired through "informal conversations."  That's why there have been very few hired to this point.

I would appreciate it if you would stop bringing rational thought to this thread.

Clearly this thread is for hyperbolic doom and gloom ‘they don’t have a plan’ ‘no one wants to come here’ posting only.

Please explain something.  Is Harrell that bad or just thar he is a pass first coordinator?  USCs problem this year was Def. Not off.

I’m not sure why so many are against him. He’s not my first choice, but he’s a solid choice. To your point, USC’s defense ranked 89th in total defense this year. They definitely didn’t help the offense out. USC were 25th in total offense, right behind Nebraska. Georgia was 27th and OU was 28th for comparison sake.
