Frost: Dawson done “great job” with special teams- may not hire a dedicated ST Coordinator

The Special Teams performance has been so poor, that I think it's needed for this team, just to ensure the team knows there is an emphasis on ST improvement.

 

Regarding the loss of a position coach, I think Beckton can do both TE's and WR's.  There is enough of an overlap in those positions, and Beckton has shown to be the best offensive coach, that I think he can take on the WR's.

You just named issues with half of the special teams units.  That's a long ways from ST being a strength.  The big thing that I think a dedicated ST coach can do is enable proper organization of the players on game day.  There will be one coach on the sideline having his ST units ready to go on the field when needed.  I think attention to detail and organization are huge weakness for Frost.  Having a dedicated ST coach should help in those weak areas.  As others have said, I think it's an overall mindset and focus on special teams which has been lacking for years at NU.

That's a good point.  Becton was at UCF for 19 years and actually coached WR's twice in that time.  10 years total as their WR coach per his bio.  Coached a Belitnekof nominee in Tre'Quan Smith in 2015 who was also freshman of the year back then in the American Athletic Conference.  Had 4 receivers in 2014 who all at least 500 yards receiving.  That was the first time in history that had been done at UCF.  Coached Breshad Perriman who got drafted in the first round in the 2015 NFL draft.  In his first year of coaching the WR's his unit totaled more than 3,100 receiving yards and 28 receiving touchdowns.  Also coached Brandon Marshall (Bears, Jets).  WR was Becton's position in college (also UCF).  He is UCF's all time leading receiver.

IMO the WR's need a lot of work, so I'm not sure spreading Beckton across TE and WR is going to be as much improvement from the ST as the loss of WR coaching. But it'd be interesting to see if it worked.

 

A bit off topic, but is Beckton possibly being promoted to OC?

IMO, the WR's need help in reading the defenses and knowing their route concepts/responsibilities. That's a big overlap with the TE position as they are all eligible receivers in route patterns.

Plenty of teams out there with a dedicated coach that stink at ST.  There are also a lot of teams without a dedicated ST coach who seem to be great at ST.  The specialists are generally what separates them.  I'm not sure if some of you understand that 99% of ST coaches do not coach how to kick a field goal or how to punt a football.

For the record, I do think a dedicated ST coach would be good.  However, I don't believe that will make or break 2022 and or Frosts ability to retain his job in the future.      

You can sugarcoat it any way you want but our special teams have been a huge liability. IDGAF what the specific issues are in each and every game or if it comes down to a specialist choking or not getting the job done. ST has been directly responsible for many of our losses, enough that a dedicated special teams coach is more than warranted.

 

And yes, I realize that many of these coaches do not work directly with kickers and their mechanics. But somebody needs to make sure things go much smoother and get this s#!t show fixed. When we can successfully complete PATs at an acceptable rate, then we can talk about not needing a coach and about how much improvement somebody has really made. Currently our STs are a f#&%ing joke. Period.

Or, we just don't have a dedicated QB coach.
