Frost: Dawson done “great job” with special teams- may not hire a dedicated ST Coordinator

Kind of a related question:  Do we need 2 linebacker coaches?  Isn't that sort of like having separate offensive tackle and guard coaches?   I can understand why one might separate TE coaching from WR coaching.  Different skill sets and assignments.  While outside LB and Inside LBs have different roles - is it that much different from a coaching perspective?   I would hate to give up either Dawson or Ruud in order to make room for a ST coach - both are doing a great job.  LB seems to be the highest performing unit we have.   Maybe the new OC handles it or we merge the TE & WR coach into one to make room even though those skill sets are different as I note above.:dunno

Maybe Frost can squeeze in some extra practices just for ST at a local high school or something like that.   er wait...

I agree with his statement for the most part. The biggest problems this year have been the place kickers and punters poor execution. You miss field goals or punt the ball to the opposite side of the field that you are suppose to isn't something I see as a coaching problem. It is a personnel problem.

I wonder who helps our kickers and punters get out of funks?

To a certain extent you can only do so much as a coach though.. I mean we had the 1st team all B1G kicker return and just lost his confidence.  What's more concerning though is I think we have about 15 punt return yards on the year.  I mean if we aren't going to attempt a return could we at least attempt to block one occasionally?  Also the "punt right" that cost us the MSU game.  From what I can tell we rarely do directional punts, so why in the most critical moment of the game we attempted to do then when it's not something we normally do is really beyond me..

Admittedly, I didn't think Frost should be retained... However, after the firing of all of the offensive coaches, I was starting to think maybe this will all work out at least ok.

But man. This just takes away from what little hope I may have.

Same.  He is the man at the top.  responsible for success or failure.  He was kept and my second hope was (if kept) he cans the entire O staff. He did.  Oh happy days.  And now this.....Sounds a lot like Cally and his "excellent in all areas" quote"....SMH......Next he will say his red zone scheme was solid.  Just lacked execution...

I will saying as far as kicking I'm not sure what else you can do. Culp was 1st team B10 last year and made all the "simple" FGs and XP last year. We even tried the backup last game and it didn't matter.

Big trouble is we look to have no plan on returning any kick or punt.

We are 126th in punt returns with a whopping 2.7 yards/return.....Kick returns 119th....KO defense we are 67th.....Punt return defense 79th....

Yep.  We leave a TON of yards on the field receiving punts or kicks...

Nebraska fans are such suckers for click bait... smh.

We have improved on special teams considerably since Dawson started coaching them.  If our kicker makes his kicks this year, our punter didn't kick the wrong way, and Cam did what was asked of him, ST would have actually been a strength.  Frost acknowledged that the specialists were the problem and that was obvious.

Plenty of teams out there with a dedicated coach that stink at ST.  There are also a lot of teams without a dedicated ST coach who seem to be great at ST.  The specialists are generally what separates them.  I'm not sure if some of you understand that 99% of ST coaches do not coach how to kick a field goal or how to punt a football.

Here is quick article that some of you should read-  https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/news/why-dont-college-football-staffs-have-kicking-punting-coaches/

For the record, I do think a dedicated ST coach would be good.  However, I don't believe that will make or break 2022 and or Frosts ability to retain his job in the future.

We have actually gotten worse from what I can tell this year (hint: keep scrolling, you didn't miss Nebraska):

We still lose the field position battle every game, that is a large part of special teams.  Hidden yards as they say.

Well for what its worth, returning punts is a pretty new concept to most on the team. Its been like 8 years since we have had a defense that could force one.
