I highly doubt Cerni makes it to fall being on the roster

Rumor is that Cerni will be placed on medical scholarship, and that will be that.

Wrong, he is still part of the team. Nebraska needs to ask for an exemption to make sure he does not count toward the total.  This will just give an extra yr of eligibility.

Wrong, there is a difference between a medical redshirt (Will Honas) and medical hardship (Tre Bryant).

Tre Bryant retired from football and got to keep his scholarship without counting against limits. This is a Tre Bryant situation, not a Will Honas situation.

Medical hardship, same as redshirt, is different when it's at the beginning of the season and during the season.  And yes, medical retirement does not count towards the scholarship totals because the player is done playing.  You can not ask for an exemption during the season, but can at the beginning. And that player can come back after the medical year.

There are Medical Hardships and Medical Disqualifications. If NU is looking to get away from counting Cerni's scholarship, then that would be a Medical Disqualification and Cerni's days playing for NU would be over. The Medical Hardship is a request to get an additional year of eligibility after sustaining a season-ending injury, which Honas is applying for. Will Honas's scholarship still counted against NU's limit in 2021, even though he was injured and didn't play.

Here is some info from the U of Washington website. https://static.gohuskies.com/old_site/pdf/genrel/medical_hardship_policy.pdf

Where did they say that they want to get him off scholarship?  I understood this to be a 1 year deal.

But that wouldn't free up the scholarship. My understanding is that they are ready to move on from Cerni, and they are offering him the medical scholarship to finish his education and NU would have that scholarship not count against the 85 limit.
