BIG ERN
Well, this is embarrassing. Ohio St 20 (2022) Michigan 9 (2022) Iowa 6 (2022) Wisconsin 5 (2021) Penn St 4 (2022) Michigan St 3 (2016) Northwestern 2 (2021) Maryland 2 (2018) Illinois 2 (2012) Purdue 1 (2022) Minnesota 1 (2021) Nebraska 0 (2011) Rutgers 0 (2010) Indiana 0 (1994) 3 1 1 1 Quote Link to comment
Decoy73
Not surprising considering our chronic lack of talent development. It’s even more embarrassing that we had supposedly out-recruited 7-8 of those schools ahead of us. 3 1 1 Quote Link to comment
84HuskerLaw
But many of those 4 stars that over weighted our recruiting class rankings were ‘skill’ positions guys, many of which didn’t stick around long enough to merit being drafted, let alone first round. Far too few big guys (lines) and too many back up WRs, RBs, QBs, etc. How many top three round picks? Not many and probably dam few WRs, RBs, QBs, TEs. The ‘pipeline’ has been history since before the Big Ten. Look at this year’s first round - loaded with O line, D line, REs, secondary and some WRs. That tells you where your recruiting emphasis MUST be to build winning teams. Our ‘best’ rated recruits flopped. The rest are largely irrelevant for a decade. Core elements are O line and defense - areas where our classes rate fairly low imo. 1 Quote Link to comment
Farms
Sometimes when you are close you just need a game changing player to get you over the hump. On a season like last year one player might take you from 3 wins to 7 wins. Just proves that we haven't had a guy like that so it's not surprising that we have been lagging in the win column. Somewhat agree on this. But, I’m not sure even Suh - a once a decade type guy - could have done it. Teams can scheme around one two and would in the Big Ten. I’d say if you could cherry pick about a dozen off each of Frost and Riley’s teams, and bring in 12 starters from any of the 40 prior teams, you’d have 10 win teams. I don’t know that that means you’re all that ‘close’ however. That’s a lot of darn good players in place of very ‘average’ guys. And, coaching and scheme are also factors. I dare say, Osborne would have twice as many wins as Frost and Riley with the exact same players. A great deal of our problems stem from team confidence, stability, retention, and game planning and execution as much as pure talent. We’ve had athletes, but darn few have truly gotten dramatically better over their years. 1 Quote Link to comment
ActualCornHusker
Gregory and Dennard might both have been 1st rounders if not for their non-football baggage 1 Quote Link to comment
