Chinander's Role

Chinander is the salaried DC.  MJ modified his role to coach mainly the safeties, moving the Fish guy to more of what Chin used to do.  <---This is the way I understand it going by Coach Mickey's remarks.  He wanted that to happen mainly, it appears.  I see it as diminishing Chin's role with the D.  Some don't see it that way but I can't help but see that he wanted to do that as the safeties have not been the D's problem so much as overall direction of the entire D itself, so he's shuffling a bit to try to make it function better.  The Fish to nickels and corners seems more of the same.

So, MJ said he's moving Fisher to acting DC?  I must have missed that.

We don't do sacks of the QB with this D staff.  Not much, anyway.  Wondering how this role change can affect that.

It's weird, but some of these tendencies stretch back through the past three coaching staffs.

• Reluctance to blitz

• Really soft coverage: the middle is almost always open

• Little to no adjustment in-game or between games.

• Too many starters with poor fundamentals

Bo Pelini had one of the greatest Husker defenses of all time in 2009, but we've been floundering in the bottom half of defense ever since. Can't say it's all about talent, either, given some of these are coaching choices.

One of my anxiety sources, wrt Husker football.  I'm hoping Coach Joseph is pondering all that.

I'd be surprised if you're correct about that.  He's calling it "two DCs" yes.  But any coach who is given a role of emphasis on particular player position is, especially in the ways MJ put it, is becoming a specialist for that portion of the squad.  Yeah Chin's salary isn't decreased or his official title, but I think we're seeing an important change in his duties, again especially as we see Fish designated to those other two positions:  nickles and corners.

You're the one that said this to my statement that Chinander is still the DC.

So....it's not me who is saying it.

He absolutely did not say Fisher is acting DC, Chins is still calling the defense. People can be mad about that all they want, but it's still his defense. Sounds like Mickey is telling him to be more aggressive to some degree, but at least for now it's a practice structure change not a change of who's in charge.

Exactly.

I have no idea what you're on about.  Is this a case of two people who agree but one of them does not like that?

I think Mike Dawson at this point is seeming like a pretty mediocre coach also. Maybe Tuioti's shoes were big ones to fill, and I get that losing the seniors from last year was big. But he didn't do much with special teams when asked to, and his units on defense suck bad this year.

Thank you.  Was reading to see if anyone mentioned Dawson.  I'd throw in Ruud as well.  Allegedly Tuioti had recruiting issues, but seemed to be able to get the guys to play and they did seem to improve. ST under Dawson?  No.  LB play under Ruud?  No.  Although LB play appeared better last year.  Tuioti was DL coach then (yes better talent), but is it a coincidence that the ILB play is worse this year than last with better DL play?  Chin might be an issue, but the D staff is starting to look busted as well.  Maybe a "better" DC can scheme to cover up a deficiency.....

in the blackshirts thread, I’ve shown multiple clips of plays where it appears certain players have no clue what they are to do.  This is at all levels of the defense. So, is that on the position coach’s? Or the coordinator?

assuming all the above. But, I’m dumbfounded as to why it’s so bad this year.
