This one is gonna be a rant, and I may get run for it, but at this point, after hearing all of the talk after this morning's news, I don't rightly care at this point....

I'm hearing all kinds of talk after Coach Chin was fired about how wonderful a guy he was, how much of a standup dude he was, how friendly he was.

That's all good, and I'm sure he was a standup guy, real great to get along with.

We all know folks like that.  People that are ride or die, nice folks who have your back through thick and then.  People you can confide in, people that you trust.

News flash - that doesn't mean that they are the best person to do the job you hire them for.

I've been in the tech industry over 22 years.  I've known folks that I'd trust to watch over my children in an emergency.  I wouldn't hire them to do what I do, though.  Why?  Because they weren't the best fit for the job.  They weren't very good at the job.  Oh, they gave it a 110% effort, and I loved them for that.  But their best wasn't good enough.

Which leads me to one of the major issues since Frank Solich was so unceremoniously fired years ago.

You are hired to do a job.  Period.  If your job is to win football games....and your loyalty to your friends is getting in the way of that....well....

Bill Callahan

Mike Riley

Bo Pelini (to some extent)

and now, Frost.

I am SICK and TIRED of hearing how standup a person is when it's obvious they aren't the right person for the job.  Who is?  I don't know, but if you have a person driving the bus who is continuously running into parked cars...would you let that person continue to drive?!?  Hell no!

College football in the 21st century is a BUSINESS.  It's a multi BILLION dollar business.  Tough decisions have to be made.

Chin should have not just been gone last year - he should never have gotten the job.  Last year was a better year for him because he rode JoJo until he couldn't any longer.  And it shows this year.

Dabo Swinney fired two assistants in 2011 because they weren't meeting with success.

Brent Venables escorted an assistant out for the use of a racial slur.  Wasn't any "oh, he was a good guy, he made a mistake."  Guy. Had. To. Go.

Georgia Tech fired 3 assistants a few years ago (and their head guy needs to get fired soon as well).

Arkansas won 9 games last year, and still fired an assistant coach.

And....

Frank Solich fired Craig Bohl after 2 seasons after the defense took a turn in the wrong direction.

When is nepotism going to stop being the norm in the athletic department in Lincoln, NE?  The "good ol boy" network only works when you're winning games.  If you're losing - you have to put on your big boy pants, make a decision to let a close friend go, and put folks into a spot that will help YOU get the kids into the best position to win games for them AND you as the head guy.  It's nothing personal, it's business, and it's your job.

So - win, lose or draw....I applaud the changes in Lincoln.  Even if Coach Joseph doesn't win the job - these changes are PAST DUE.  And the expectation that you are guaranteed a job each year?  Screw all that.  You need to develop players and deliver success in the classroom AND on the field.  If you can't do that - you need to find another place to land other than Lincoln, Nebraska.

My rant is over, I go prepare to get things ready for House of the Dragon now....

It’s difficult for good coaches to coach with and for other coaches that are neglectful in the area of accountability too. If the superior doesn’t give much of a damn to hold people accountable (including or him/herself)  those acting on their behalf are going to have a hell of a challenge doing it themselves.

Bosses can have cordial, even loving relationships with their subordinates. Friendships however is a bad idea. Keep it professional.

You’ll get no flames from here. Everything you shared has great relevance!

Thanks - I'm just fed up.  We're four games into the season, and the season is already over in most people's minds.  It's ridiculous.

I comment on other fan boards and even they are scratching their heads at some of the decisions made.  How the last two ADs can give an extension to a couple of head football coaches who have done nothing to deserve it.  How guys were allowed to keep their jobs after abysmal performances on the field.  How undisciplined the football team is on gameday.

By gawd, this is NEBRASKA.  We're a college football blue blood for crying out loud.

I don't feel bad for anyone right now in this current state of the program.  The program is bigger than any one coach and thats a fact.  It is time to start getting results.  Those results won't happen this year.  Honestly, Frost was coaching as if he knew this would be it if he didn't win and by losing to NW and Georgia South, it was over.  Chins knew his time was coming as well.  In the coaching profession they know things don't always work out and can see for themselves that things will get changed.  Chins knew last week that his time here was almost up.  I am sure Frost warned him.  This sucks for Mickey.  He won't get the Head job, but is doing all the dirty work that needs done for Alberts and the program.  I think this season is all but over.  I think kids are going to be emotionally done with this place and be moving on.  That really don't bother me that much, but to some extent does a little bit.  This whole thing right now is so out of whack its not even funny.  We have 3 more months of speculating on coaching hires and or not .  This is an unhealthy enviroment for the players and all the coaches.  Turmoil U.  Desparation U.  Things and words you don't ever want surrounding a program.

I agree. That's why I'm saying firing Chins doesn't matter whether we did it now or later. That's exactly my point. I'm pushing back against this wave of joy in this thread like firing Chins accomplished something - it didn't. Example of what I'm talking about:

the guy blew dead tuna. I said he sucked when they hired him from day 1. You can lament the firing and push all you want. Stab at wind wills if it’s your thing.  Me? The firing gives a little bit of hope of getting the program back to being competitive. Keeping him sure was not going to push the needle into playing winning defense.

It's not about the defense getting better. It's about removing people that are poisoning the culture of the program.

If Mickey's firing someone, it's because keeping them on board would do more damage than letting them go.

Agree 100%.  And like you I am surprised it took this long. We saw enough by the end of the ND game much less the NW game. Maybe MJ will get some verbal help / advise from his brother. I’ll be interested in seeing how Busch changes things

Yes I am concerned about it because it speaks to a s#!tty undisciplined culture. It’s like “hey look at me” when you have been getting your a$$ kicked the whole game. No good teams do this garbage, not even at the high school level.

Have you watched any football over the last 5+ years. The DBs celebrate everything, even if they had nothing to do with it. It is not just a Nebraska thing man.
