Black Shirts separate the team in an unproductive way; fielding an amazing lights out defense should simply be our standard, and not something to make a big deal out of. Look at Iowa's defense the last several years - one of the best statistically speaking over the last decade, and they just go out and get their business done with zero hype. That's actually a good model for how our D should operate going forward. Quote Link to comment
Caveman
The media drama surrounding the blackshirts is annoying, but no need to erase one of our unique traditions. I just hope the new coach distributes the jerseys to the starting defense...and that's it. No subjective performance requirements. No punitive reclamations. Keep it simple. 3 Quote Link to comment
thexyz
The Blackshirts are associated with legacy. Leaving the team better than when you came here. It's not a casual tradition. There's meaning and purpose behind them. As a player, what do you want your legacy to be. We need that now more than ever to rebuild. Honor everyone that wore the jersey before you. Make your contribution to the defensive unit. That's my interpretation of it. Go on with the Blackshirts! Quote Link to comment

No, the blackshirts just mean that you are a defensive starter. 1 Quote Link to comment

Moiraine
I mean… you could just give them to the starters. The whole team knows who the starters are regardless of what color the jerseys are, so I fail to see how the tradition makes them separate. Quote Link to comment
