I think Trev and the admin did a good job of keeping focus and not going after some flashy new coach. I bet they got shot down a lot but still didn't just settle for a one-dimensional offensive coach. Everybody's talking about offense offense offense while their defense looks like the 2007 Kansas game.

Agreed that we need someone that doesn’t let defense be an after thought but after Bush took over our defense did enough to win games for the most part. All the offense had to do was not be a complete dumpster fire. Hell our D did better against Michigan than Ohio state did. Let that marinate for a hot minute. How about Offense offense w a side of Defense and Special teams? :cheers

They were never great on offense.  But trended significantly in the right direction is almost every category.

Defense on the other hand....

Yep total defense by year per sports reference:

2017-114

2018-91

2019-20

IIRC, Rhule took over in 2017 and players were leaving left and right after Briles debacle.  His 1st recruit class was composed of 3* or less.  By 2019 had developed them and got a top 20 defense.... Hoping he can go for a three peat at NU and do the same as his previous 2 collegiate stops....

Looking at those numbers makes me think it's even more likely that Rhule could (should?) give Mickey a shot.  He's been able to put together some very good defenses.  But he hasn't had the same level of success on offense.

Perhaps he could use a guy that can bring in some play-makers.

Since I don't have a lot of time to do my own research and to look back through the threads, does anyone know Rhule's offensive and defensive schemes?

Is he a spread offense guy, RPO guy? Is he a 3-4,4-3, or 4-2-5 guy?

On offense, he seems to have come from a power-run background; lots of 22 personnel.  But he's adapted and lately used more of an RPO-based scheme out of lots of 11 and even 10 personnel.

On defense, he used to be a 4-3 guy but became more of a 3-4 guy.  And even incorporated some 3-3-5 as warranted.

I'd hope that he'd at least entertain that.  Seems like our entire 2023 class committed because of MJ.

Hoping he raids the transfer portal for some TE's if he likes running 22 personnel.  I'd have love that this year using Chance a lot more as the HB type TE.  I liked when we did use it.  He was a very destructive blocker.    Vok gone, Chance gone and no one else with a lot of snaps.  Hoping Fidone stays, but unsure how he will be in year 3 with 2 surgeries....

RPO, I'd assume he will also look for a more mobile QB?  Anyone in the wings on our roster that could run that?  Haarberg, Torres, Smothers, Purdy, Masker...

Sounds like by the time he got to Baylor he had gone almost exclusively to 11 & 10 personnel.

I would assume we will go back to having at least some threat of the QB run game.  Charlie Brewer threw for 3,161 yards and 21 TDs in Rhule's last year at Baylor but was also their third-leading rusher with 344 yards and led the team with 11 TDs.  I think any of those QBs we already have could be enough of a threat to do that.

Was hoping for Luke Fickell, but I guess this is ok.  My only worry is he has a very puncheable face.  Just wondering if that'll bring us good luck or bad luck.

I’m trying to think of a coach that doesn’t have a punchable face. I’m coming up blank.
