Some interesting stuff from Severe on some areas of concern which maybe aren't being talked about enough. He did acknowledge this was one of the first (or possibly
the first) padded practice of fall camp after a long fan day, so this is maybe one of the worst days to make snap judgements of players on. feel better about them than he sounded, which doesn't mean a lot since he's a lot more plugged in and knowledgeable about the team.
Some specific areas are:
- RB depth behind EJ and Mekhi Nelson
- LB
- Defensive backfield
- Raiola decision making speed
I'd be really worried about RB depth if Nelson wasn't being praised from every direction, as it is I'm moderately worried. I think a combination of Mozee/Ives and maybe a splash of Parker and Booth is fine for RB3, if you can guarantee the health of RB1 and RB2 (which obviously you can't). But I'm hopeful Mozee in particular progresses through camp and through the early season to be a legit option down the stretch.
He thinks MWT is
very small and has concerns about how he holds up. I'm willing to bet on the track record and experience - although he brought up last years Boise game as one where MWT got bullied - especially because I don't think he even practiced Saturday so think it's mostly based on appearance. Javin Wright is a freak, but he's also never been healthy for any significant stretch of time. Shavers is great, but then you're down to guys like Stenger, Bower (who he is pretty low on, even with Rhule hyping him up), and the freshmen Jones and Merrit. I think MWT will be solid, and I think being a rotational 4th guy would be fine for any of the guys listed. You hope for healthy seasons from all, but at the least I think we can buy time for Jones or Merrit to settle into being usable. I am not shocked that they aren't jumping out at practice yet, if they aren't flashing in a couple weeks it will be more alarming.
DBs was more about the number of plays the WRs were making, and Raiola getting the quick throws off was more from last year. Both valid I'm sure, and I don't know that Raiola will ever totally give up big play hunting. But hopefully he can be smarter about it, and there are just too many athletes and coaches I believe in for the DBs to not settle in IMO. But all in all I thought it was some interesting perspective. I don't think anyone is shocked at the top 2 in particular being areas of concern, but I always kind of assume they will work themselves out and that hasn't happened yet anyway.
