Does Nebraska have a 1000 yard wide receiver this year for first time in school history? I say probably not. Too many good options for one player to pile up the yardage, especially with, and if DPE is back and healthy. Plus, Riley may lean more heavily on run game as did against UCLA.

Absolutely will happen; multiple times in future with wide receiver talent likely coming and pro style qb's hand picked by Riley and Langsdorf

Oh i know. Not that i don't think he is capable. Other factors; playcalling, gameplanning, and most of all a plethora of really talented wide receivers. That crew is just getting deeper and more talented by the year. Westerkamp, Reilly, Morgan, Moore, DPE and I am sure I am leaving out several young guys

The UCLA game was more of a "Do what it takes to win" blueprint. Nobody should expect us to duplicate that approach very often, especially on a weekly basis.
Westerkamp could do it if TA is up to the task this year, but I agree that the amount of targets we have at the ready make it incredibly unlikely.

Sure ya do. We were 5-7 entering a game many said we didn't deserve. If we go in there and throw it a crapload of times against one of the worst rush defenses in the country.....AGAIN, and leave 5-8, it would have been ugly for the staff.
Instead they adapted to the challenge at hand and beat UCLA the way they knew they had a chance to do so. I'm not saying they won't do that week to week, hell I would be all for that approach. I'm just saying what we already know, the run game is not going to be the focal point moving forward.

Eh, I think we make too much of the UCLA game.
Nebraska ran well in other games, too. Then less well when opposing defenses adjusted and/or the Nebraska defense gave back too many points too quickly. UCLA didn't make the adjustment, and we passed just enough to make sure they couldn't. Also, the UCLA defense was notoriously bad, but I still liked the win.
There was something both on the field and behind the scenes that kept a featured RB from emerging last season, and too much talent at WR to ignore.
Tommy Armstrong needed to run more often, both by design and in rollout options. Given the option, he preferred to pass, sometimes preferring the panicky pass over a two yard scramble to the sideline. By the UCLA game he seemed a bit more chastened by the criticism. The gameplan helped, but Tommy also played under better control. We may forget that he turned a called run into an unscheduled pass in the fourth quarter of the UCLA game, nearly identical to the Illinois brain fart, but it didn't hurt us in the end. He simply needs to play a savvier game, run or pass.
I don't have any doubt that Riley will run it more this season, and I'm guessing Tommy and Ozigbo will be the beneficiaries. He won't run it enough for some Husker traditionalists, but it's not like he's allergic to the concept.

The run game not being the focal point going forward is what it is. Whether or not it SHOULD be is an entirely different discussion.

It depends who our offensive coordinator is and what kind of athlete we have at QB. Right now we are spoiled at WR but have a guy that may not be the best at consistently getting them the ball. Meanwhile, RB is serviceable for now until a true star emerges.
I'm not a big fan of the pass first mentality either, but I'm willing to see what they do with it. I think the culture here and the opponents have opened the staffs eyes a bit towards the run, so we could see it get utilized more fluently.

At OSU, the featured back was getting between 250-290 touches per game. When he returned to OSU after the Chargers stint, Steven Jackson ran the ball 350 times. Up until the Mannion years, they were about 51/49 run
ass, then things got pretty pass happy with Mannion - which IMO why they slipped the final few years, and that mentality carried over to NU. They need to establish a run game too. Anyway, it appears when Riley had a dynamic RB, they did establish the run game and ran a pretty balanced offense - I don't believe balanced means 50/50, I think it varies between teams and how they mix up what they do best to keep defenses honest. I can't say that Nebraska had a dynamic back last year that we could rely on and it's still up in the air this year, although I like Ziggy and interested in what they Bryant kid could bring. I'll also say that Langs didn't call an effective run game to give guys the chances they deserve, which also never allowed the team a chance to get in rhythm. So, while I think things can change for the better, I'm not counting on buying the run game until I see it.
If there could be a 1000yard receiver this upcoming season, I would be very very impressed because I believe that would speak volumes to the development of TA by Langs and the growth and maturity of TA to realize his talents when playing disciplined football.
