So ESPN wants to make a 20 team playoff that they call a 16 team playoff with extra steps so that they don't lose the rights to broadcasting the playoff, meanwhile Fox wants to push it to 24 because they want to bid on getting the rights.

Yep, likely. However, the 24 team playoff allows for more access and meaningful games later in the season, likely better non-conference games, more playoff games on campus, no stupid conference title games that nobody cares about anymore and Fox and ESPN involved instead of just ESPN controlling the narrative and the whole thing. Bowls can still exist even though most of them are ESPN TV creations anyway. I'm sick of the ESPN employee Josh Pate crap about certain brands/schools are contenders for the playoff and others you can exclude from jump. If Indiana taught people anything; it's that the old way of thinking doesn't matter anymore. Indiana is a bigger brand than Clemson now. Old farts on the radio keep propping up Dabo and giving him more mulligans for not adapting.

The CFP should have only ever been for conferences champions, but the fluidity of conference alignment/existence, along with independents makes that a little tricky. Even so the format should have always stated all FBS conference champions receive an automatic bid. It preserves the meaning of the regular season, conference championships, and every one gets a shot. This doesn't need to be as difficult as the money makes.

I don't give a crap that some people think certain conferences are weaker than other, work it out in the seeding or play-ins. The better teams will find a way to win.

I'm not the only one that has a decided lack of interest in them as viewership has dropped off. In these large super conferences; they are a dinosaur in the way of more playoff games that are better for the sport. I can live with a committee getting the 24th or 25th team wrong, much like the 76th or 77th team in basketball.

I agree with everything you say. I misread the first post I quoted as having the playoff committee actually choose who were the conference champs, not as choosing from conference champs!

How is conference record and tie breakers a guess? That's literally how this has worked forever. I believe the B1G is the largest conference at 18 teams, everyone else has 16 or less. The NFL has 2 conferences with 16 teams each, are they bloated?

24 teams is insane! There's absolutely no point to that in American collegiate football other than pure monetary greed. If you can't even put together a good enough season (where, oh by the way, you play at least half your conference's teams) to make your conference championship game, what business do you have being in the hunt for a national title?
