2015 Season Excitement

Redux

Assistant Coach
As I sit here watching Michigan hosting Notre Dame under the lights in 2011 something occus to me. I am so excited for this season. And not just Nebraska, but college football in general. I mean I always am, but I'm watching a 4 year old game that doesn't have a stich of Husker red in it. What's different?

The difference is there is a reason to be excited this year. As Husker fans we had grown to know what we could expect year after year. The opportunities to jump ahead of the oack were always there, but to a degree we all knew what was coming.

Enter Mike Riley and a whole lot of enthusiasm and unknown. I like that. I like not knowing what is coming this year. That's what drew me to the sport in the first place. When you fall in a rut it is hard to get excited. We just had the first plyoff ever last year and the season was pretty blah for me because I knew none of the prestige was coming from Lincoln.

I know we aren't winning the playoff, or even a conference title this year more than likely. That is okay because there is reason to be excited again.

I'm stoked to watch what is unveiled at Nebraska. Also stoked to see what happens with Oregon, life after Mariota.

Pretty standard to be excited after a coaching change, to be expected.

Personally, I doubt Nebraska wins the division this season. The next few seasons after this one are very difficult from a scheduling standpoint, as we play Ohio State, Oregon, etc. I hope that Nebraska can find a way to gut out a few games, but I feel like Nebraska is at a breaking point. Nebraska might start the season with 3 early losses at the hands of BYU, Miami and Wisconsin. I think Mike Riley will get a pass, as he should, considering this is his first season at the helm.

Combine that with tough schedules in the future, and things look awfully similar to what we've expected out of Nebraska over the last 15 years: no championships, likely blowout losses, a program clinging to history that's 20 years old. I truly hope the team can find a way to win some of the major games in the next few seasons, and finally have a breakthrough year where we make it to an Orange/Cotton/Rose/Peach/Sugar/Fiesta bowl. I just don't see it happening at this point.

Yeah, this offseason has seemed to fly by. Tomorrow, the 2015 season begins to ramp up with the start of media days. We've got 3 weeks of that, and then fall camp. Can't wait!

Bo Pelini being an exception, most new head coaches at big time schools get at least one huge signature win pretty early on - hell, even Dan Hawkins beat #3 Oklahoma in his 2nd year I think.

Considering Mike Riley's legitimate reputation as a giant killer, one of the next three seasons will feature at least one win over an Oregon or OSU or MSU, which will go a long ways towards perception if we can put an otherwise respectable but not perfect record.

For the first time in years I feel confindent we're not going to get piss pounded by Wisconsin.

That's an exciting feeling.

At the same time, if we do end up getting pummeled by them, it will sting that much more.

I feel like our QB situation is shakey at best and a couple key injuries on defense could cripple us.

And still I actually am looking forward to the season more than last year. As a fan last year felt like it was a wash even going in. I had plenty of optimism, but we knew what was at stake and we were handed more of the same.

I know Sparty has been doing better lately, but in my heart, I will never accept a win over Sparty as a signature win.

I am excited about BYU. If we curb stomp them, then the natural order of the universe is starting to return. If we lose, then we spend another few years in purgatory.

Just ready to see some good clean fundamental and technically sound football.

I believe the offense and defense will be a more likeable style of football for me personally.

Looking forward to being competitive and not being our own worst enemy.

We should be a more focused team. Focused more on football and the game on Saturdays and less about the outside world and all the stuff they can't control.

Mental and physical toughness should be a new found strength not a constant issue of discussion.

I'm excited to see the results from this new strength and conditioning coaching the boys are getting.

We may lose some games, but hopefully it won't be in the fashion they've been getting far too used to lately.

Even more exciting is competing and possibly winning some of those big games. That Miami game was so freaking brilliant last year and that comeback against MSU was so damn fun to watch. Had we been a bit more consistent team we'd not even been in the position of having to comeback in that game. Maybe it won't be an issue moving forward.

I'm really looking forward yo the new offensive line coaching.

I want to see Tommy executing a well-coached, simplified offense where the plays are determined and executed. Less reads and more execution. Back to some basics.

The use of the TE in the offense again. Heavily.

A downhill run game with more blockers on the line of scrimmage. Running inside the tackles instead of around them.

Possible sightings of the FB again.

A staff that already knows the value of special teams.

Langsdorf!

I really could go on and on........I really disliked the last coaching staff and I really like this one. I'm rooting for them big time. I can't wait to see how it all plays out.

The rest of the college football world thinks higher of Tommy than that. He's been far better than "shaky" so far in his career and I would expect a vast improvement here in his junior year with the new coaches. If Tommy goes down, then yes its very unclear, but that's no different than its been for quite awhile here now. Its pretty much that way everywhere. Its always a bad situation when you're starter goes down minus a few rare examples.

Defensively, if we lose a DE or a linebacker it could be a very bad situation. More guys getting more work in practice, better teaching, and a simplified scheme may at least help make that adjustment if needed. We were truly left with very little depth or experience at those positions. How or why a coach would ever let it get that bad at two key spots, I don't know, but there's a lot of things about Bo and his staff that were unexplainable.

You really should, imo. Last season the only two teams they lost to were the two teams playing in the national championship, both tough fought games. The season before, their only loss was to Notre Dame with several suspect pass interference penalties. 2012 they lost 5 games by a combined 13 points, and 2011 they finished 10th.

42-12 over 4 years with 4 bowl wins, a conference championship, another appearance, and tons of huge wins? They're the real deal right now.

What makes you think so? I haven't seen it. Every list I've seen ranking the conference quarterbacks he's 5th or 6th or best.
