Why Wyoming Will Win

There wasn’t any Nebraska game whatsoever in the win over Fresno State. It wasn’t necessary considering the ground attack took care of things in the blowout, but it simply didn’t work with Tommy Armstrong and Ryker Fyfe combining to complete 6-of-13 passes for 108 yards and a touchdown.

The Cowboys were lit up by the Northern Illinois passing game – they couldn’t stop Huskie WR Kenny Golladay – but the Huskers aren’t going to start bombing away now. At least that’s Wyoming’s hope.

Nebraska’s big concern, though, is the rebuilding and thin defensive line. It looked terrific against Fresno State, but the Bulldogs don’t have any semblance of a ground game. The Huskers generated pressure, but it mostly came from other defensive parts. Now they’re going to have to deal with Brian Hill, who combined with new starting quarterback Josh Allen to run for close to 200 yards against NIU. Give these two a little bit of room, and they’ll move the offense.

Why Nebraska Will Win

Can Nebraska stay as sharp as it was against Fresno State? There might have been seven penalties, but there weren’t any turnovers, the lines were solid, and overall, it was a good performance – Fresno State was never in the game. If the Huskers don’t screw up, Wyoming might not have a chance.

The Cowboys might have gotten the win over NIU, but the kicking game was lousy, Cooper Rothe missed two field goals, and the ten penalties hurt. Throw in the errors in the secondary along with a D line that was okay against the Huskies, but is about to be pounded on, and Nebraska should be in control after a few drives.

What’s Going To Happen?

Can Josh Allen repeat the magic he showed against NIU? He threw for 245 yards and two scores, ran for 70 yards and the game-winning score, and he looked like the type of all-around baller who could be an X factor against a tough Husker D that’ll focus on stopping Hill.

But it’s not going to happen.

This is when Tommy Armstrong and the passing attack starts to work again, balancing out the offense after using the ground game to come up with points off the first two drives. Nebraska will look outstanding against the Mountain West for the second week in a row.

Let it be known that Wyoming already has one upset under its belt this season. It entered its season opener at home against Northern Illinois as 10-point underdogs, but after three overtimes, Wyoming came out 1-0. Nebraska obviously has a much better football pedigree than NIU, but the Cowboys proved they’re a much better team than many thought coming into the season. Sophomore quarterback Josh Allen was efficient, throwing for 245 yards and running for 70 more. He also scored three touchdowns in his first career start.

Allen’s top two wideouts are 6 foot, 2 inches and 6 foot, 6 inches, and Nebraska coach Mike Riley said Wyoming’s big receivers worry him. But Wyoming did allow NIU 462 yards, including 329 in the air. Expect Nebraska to be crisper in the passing game and use this week as an opportunity to get Tommy Armstrong and the receiving crew in rhythm. Look for Allen to make plays and keep Wyoming in the game. I think this one will be a little too close for comfort most of the game, before Nebraska pulls away late.

"Was never in the game"

I love that part. yeah. All except for that stretch of 15 minutes in the 2nd quarter where we gifted em 10 points and let them stay IN the game.

Still wouldn't be surprised if this is a game heading in to the fourth quarter and Nebraska has to squeak it out.

Me either. The last 2 matchups, Wyoming has played NU close in Lincoln.
Wasn't all that easy in Laramie, either.
Nebraska can't take anyone lightly and Wyoming is a Div 1 football program.

However, I didn't remember them in Laramie being that close of a game. We were up 14-7 at half, 24-7 after 3rd and won the game 38-14. We had 490 yards of offense compared to their 305. Burkhead had a good game with 170 yards rushing.

No.....we didn't win 70 -0. But, I don't remember us struggling to win.

It would have been 45-14 but Bo did the right thing and kneed it in the Red Zone towards the end.

Well, I was there - standing right in the middle of the Wyoming student section. And I didn't say we struggled to win. I just said it wasn't all that easy.

Like you said, we were only ahead 14-7 at the half. We got two personal fouls on Wyoming to help our first drive of the second half to a TD. Then we had to kick a FG after having first and goal on the 6 on the second drive before fumbling away our third drive. Wyoming also missed a FG in the third quarter. So the score wasn't really that close but we weren't having that easy of a time of it either until we pulled away in the fourth quarter.

Also, we were struggling to find another CB early that year. Josh Mitchell had looked good the week before then didn't even make the trip. So we started Corey Cooper at corner which failed miserably and we spent the entire game throwing whoever we could find at that spot and still had some trouble with Wyoming's freshman QB.

Assuming we don't go pass crazy and throw a bunch of INTs, NU should win this game easily. I really hope DL sticks with establishing a strong run game before setting Tommy loose with his arm.
