2017 State of the Huskers - Quarterback

The competition has already started, in the words of offensive coordinator Danny Langsdorf. During the fall, Lee and O'Brien took some snaps during Sunday practices. The coach has already been evaluating them both on the field, in the film room and in most everything they do.

Husker fans should hope this competition runs hotter than a Saturday in mid-July, but as of right now, an educated guess would seem to have Lee as the favorite. He maybe didn't come from a Power-5 school, but those two years of college football experience from Tulane are handy. It's more than that, though.

Since Lee has arrived on campus, pretty much every review you hear of him from NU staffers is positive. He was an offensive scout-team MVP this fall. He's got a presence and work habits that have been said to quickly gain the respect of peers.

Well Tanner Lee is the perfect guy to test my premise.

Apparently he's nobody's blue-chipper, but a comfortable and consistent pocket passer.

As much as I defended Tommy Armstrong, I always wondered if even a modest upgrade in completion percentage would win more games than Tommy's high-risk, high excitement brand of offense. A more efficient passing game would be the running game's best friend.

Knowing Tanner's already earned leadership cred from teammates is a definite plus.

I don't mind Patrick O'Brien stewing a bit on the sidelines. Doesn't sound like Riley would sit him if he thought O'Brien gave him a better chance of winning.

Riley will play the best guy.........hoping POB doesn't walk if he isn't the starter. He came with lots of hype, seen this movie before, Gebbia may move up quickly be default if POB is not patient.

Langs also discussed looking for a walk on QB to give us 4-5 players if you include Darlington.
I think they want the walk-on so they can move Darlington back to WR.

They want three guys who they could use in a game if needed. Depending on the situation, you could play the walk-on to avoid burning Gebbia's redshirt.

It's gonna be Lee starting. I don't know if it will finish that way but he will start. They talk about him just like they talk about other guys they play.

60% is the magic number. Running QB or not, if you dip much below 60%, you are not going to be consistent enough to have a championship season.

With Langs coaching it will be closer to 65%, look what he did with Eli Manning in just one year. Tanner Lee is a career 56% guy but expect that to go up 10%.

I don't see how Lee couldn't be the starter simply due to his experience unless he starts playing horrendously in practice. Gebbia's frame scares me right now (180 lbs) so he needs to bulk up and from what I saw of POB in the spring game wasn't exactly mind blowing.

I think Lee gets the nod just off of experience alone.

Agree with the above sentiments. I think it's Lee's job to lose.
Lee wasn't brought here to not play. He was all but "promised" the gig, as long as all things are equal he will start.
i guess that promise is not a glowing endorsement for POB........this could be dangerous and blow up in Riley's face. Or, look for more Tulane transfers........
