2026-27 Season Notes

ESPN has the Huskers as 18 in their "Way Too Early" top 25.

ESPN 26-27 Way Too Early

After putting together the biggest surprise season of anyone in college basketball, what does coach Fred Hoiberg have in store for an encore? Rienk Mast, Jamarques Lawrence and Sam Hoiberg are all gone, but elite shotmaker Pryce Sandfort and sixth man extraordinaire Braden Frager should be back. Berke Buyuktuncel should also return as a starter. The Cornhuskers could use point guard help, though, and perhaps a reliable frontcourt player alongside Buyuktuncel.

Projected starting lineup

Cale Jacobsen (4.6 PPG)
Braden Frager (11.7 PPG)
Pryce Sandfort (17.9 PPG)
Berke Buyuktuncel (6.7 PPG)
Ugnius Jarusevicius (16.2 PPG at Central Michigan in 2024-25)

I think this is funny. Cale will not be a starter, but he will bring good energy off the bench like this year.
I agree that he is unlikely to start, but with the players currently on the roster, he's kind of the only choice unless Will Cooper (redshirted last year after transferring from Air Force) or one of the incoming freshmen are going to start.

We will be having a point guard coming in from the portal.

Right, but ESPN can only use players that are currently on the roster to guess the starters. They will put out another guess in a couple of months and if Nebraska is still in their top 25, it will have a better idea who is starting.

CBS Sports put out their way too early top 25+1. Huskers come in at 22. Must have adjusted after BK entered the portal because it doesn't mention him.

CBS 26-27 Way too Early

This ranking is based on the Cornhuskers returning five of the top nine scorers -- specifically Pryce Sandfort, Braden Frager, Ugnius Jarusevicius, Connor Essegian and Cale Jacobsen --- from a team that finished 28-7 and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the 2026 NCAA Tournament. That core will be joined by a recruiting class highlighted by four-star prospects Colin Rice and Jacob Lanier.

Here are your new starters w/ bench player
Kapke / Curtis or Uge
Omer / Uge or Betts
Frager / Lanier or Rice
Sandfort / Essegian
Leonhardt / Jacobsen

Nebraska will be looking for a new strength & conditioning coach. Kurt Joeseph took a job with the Pelicans.

Can't really comment on Joesph's competency, but was always surprised that donu's rep in all sports in this field really didn't seem to produce the "look" many of our rivals sported in basketball. Maybe not a bad change??

Players seemed to like him. Really helped Mast recover from his knee surgery.
