Cosgrove on todays practice:

There was a lot of energy for a hot, hot day. We’ve banged around pretty good, we didn’t scrimmage much last year. We’ve been scrimmaging quite a bit this year. Of course, you have to be smart about how much you do it. Yet, we need to tackle in the open field. You have to work on that. What’s more, we want to come out in games and start fast. The kids need scrimmage experience.”

I like the enthusiasm, I see guys on the sideline giving guys high-fives and congratulating guys for doing a good job. That was one of our goals going into camp, to develop chemistry and leadership on our defense, and I’ve seen it. We’re having fun out there.”

Kickers going at it

Downing: Due to the fact Eric (Lueshen) -Walkon-missed a couple of days with an injured leg, Jordan and David probably have a little bit of an edge right now.

Both of them (Jordan and Dyches) remain very, consistent, particularly up to about 42 yards. They’re hitting the ball very well. I think Jordan has made the adjustment to kicking off the grass fairly easily. We see him getting the ball up more and more every day. David, quite honestly, has had a pretty good camp. He’s striking the ball very, very well, probably better than at any time last year.

Downing on Cogdon: He's had a lot of great instruction, but the thing I think that probably sets him apart is he thinks more maturely, he thinks like a guy that's already kicked in big time college football games. He thinks like David does in that 'I've got to make every kick, this is my job and this is what I do and I need my teammates to trust me

Downing: We are going put them in some more of what we call money type situations. Where something is riding on the kick or the team is around them screaming and yelling. We just want to give them a little bit of a feel of game time pressure."

Weakside Linebacker battle (WILL)

Bo Ruud and Juco Steve Octavien are still battling for the starting spot.

Cosgrove: They're all doing a nice job. I will have the ability if I need to move one of those WILL's. I haven’t made a final decision on that. That will come game week. They’re both aware there could be a switch, which we've done in the past to get our best players on the field I’ve had conversations with both of them, they both have big-play ability.

On Freshman Phillip Dillard

Cosgrove: He’s still a little raw, but he has some natural ability. He’s very physical

Lance Brandenburgh is still out and the middle linebacker (MIKE) battle seems to be heating up between Corey McKeon and Phillip Dillard with Lance out of the mix

Cosgrove: I expect to get Lance back soon. When he comes back he’ll be fresh, and Lance is a smart kid, so he’ll pick things up quickly.”

Downing on Herian:

"I think he progresses everyday, he's always in our meetings, he's always out on the field with us talking, so mentally I know where he's at. He's got a greater understanding of the offense than he had last year at anytime"

-Offensive lineman Brandon Koch (offense), Defensive End Adam Carriker (defense), Sophomore cornerback Tierre Green (special teams) wore the yellow Tour De Camp jerseys today.

Tommarow will be the last 2 a days before saturdays Fan day scheduled from 10 am -11:30 am before the Huskers return to practice on Sunday for their final fall camp practice before regular inseason practice begins in preperation for Maine
