One of the season's highlights for Texas Tech may have come in Lincoln in the conference opener for both schools on September 16th. The Red Raiders tied the score at 23 in the second set before succumbing to the Huskers 25-23. Texas Tech has not won a set against Nebraska since 2003. This season, Tech is winless in Big 12 play, with only a single set win against Colorado two weeks ago keeping them from complete futility. Their last match win was against Gonzaga on September 11th.

Sophomore middle blocker Michelle Kuester is from Norfolk, Nebraska, helping lead Norfolk Catholic High School to their first undefeated season in 2007. She transferred to Texas Tech from Iowa Western CC after her freshman year.

Lubbock, Texas – Hannah Werth and Tara Mueller combined for 26 kills, as eighth-ranked Nebraska posted a 3-0 victory over Texas Tech, winning by scores of 25-12, 25-20, 25-20, Wednesday evening.

The Huskers (16-5, 9-3 Big 12) relied on the outside attack against the Red Raiders, as Werth posted her 10th double-double of the season with a match-high 15 kills and 12 digs, while Mueller picked up her sixth double-double of the campaign with 11 kills on .360 hitting and 10 digs. On the night, Nebraska out-hit Texas Tech, .308-.093, as Sydney Anderson dished out 39 assists and added four kills and three blocks and 10 digs for her 13th double-double.

Nebraska also played well defensively, out-digging Texas Tech (2-18, 0-11 Big 12), 55-48, as four Huskers finished in double figures in digs. The Huskers also recorded seven blocks, including a match-high five blocks from Brooke Delano.

Nebraska used an offensive barrage in the first set, hitting .483 as a team in rolling to a 25-12 victory. The Huskers were led by its outside hitters, as Mueller and Werth had five kills apiece while holding the Red Raiders to .026 hitting. The Huskers got off to a great start from its outside hitters, using a 5-1 run to turn a 5-3 lead into a 10-4 lead after a Anderson kill, as Werth and Mueller combined for six early kills. The Red Raiders pulled to within 13-9, but the Huskers used strong serving from Werth and Kayla Banwarth, as the Huskers posted a 10-1 run, including six straight on Kayla Banwarth’s serve, to build a 23-10 lead after back-to-back blocks from Delano and Licht.

In the second set, the Huskers held off a charge from the Red Raiders in taking a 25-20 victory. NU was held to .208 hitting but held the Red Raiders to .152 hitting and came up big down the stretch. With the score tied at five, Nebraska went on a 7-2 run to build a 12-7 lead after an Anderson kill. Nebraska would manage the lead for most of the set, building an 18-14 lead after a Delano kill before Texas Tech would fight back. The Red Raiders ran off two straight to pull within 18-16 and eventually whittled the lead to Tech would 21-20 after a Husker service error. NU would regroup, as Licht came through with a big kill before a Tech attack error made it 23-20 and forced the Red Raiders to call timeout. Kayla Banwarth then drilled an ace into the corner before a lift call after a rally gave the Huskers a 2-0 lead to the locker room.

Banwarth finished with 11 digs and tied her season high with two aces, as Nebraska racked up six aces on the night.

In the finale, Nebraska trailed 4-1 early on, but came right back by winning six of the next nine rallies to pull even at seven apiece. The Huskers trailed 10-7, but two Werth kills sandwiched around a block by Jordan Wilberger and Anderson tied the score as 10 and forced Texas Tech to call timeout. Delano continued to serve well, continuing a 5-0 spurt, as the Huskers built a 12-10 lead on a Werth kill. After Tech pulled even at 12, kills from Werth and Wilberger helped Nebraska use a 6-1 spurt to build an 18-13 lead after Licht’s solo block. The Red Raiders made one last run, pulling to within 20-16, but a Delano kill and a block by the Husker middle blocker gave the Huskers a comfortable six-point lead at 22-16.

Amanda Dowdy led Texas Tech with 14 kills on .462 hitting while no other Red Raider had more than seven kills in the loss.

The Huskers will head to Austin, Texas, to take on No. 2 Texas Friday night at 6 p.m. The match will be carried on the Husker Sports Network and on Huskers.com. The match will also be televised by FSN Midwest.
