A blue-chip QB will make things fun at Nebraska again

May 17, 2007

When I heard that Nebraska had landed a verbal commitment from St. Louis area prospect Blaine Gabbert, considered by many to be the top high school quarterback in the nation, I did two things:

1. Smiled

2. Texted a message to Big Red Big Boss man Bill Callahan and standout Cornhusker defensive coordinator/recruiter Kevin Cosgrove.

They texted back quickly. But, of course, the Husker coaches can't discuss Gabbert, since he can't sign a letter-of-intent until February. But, let's put it this way: I think everyone in Lincoln is happy.

And so am I. This is another sign that Callahan is on course to return Big Red to its rightful place among the college football elite. Winning the Big 12 North last year was a good sign of progress. The next step: Winning the school's first league title since 1999. Yeah, seven seasons have passed since Nebraska won a conference crown. Amazing. I never thought I'd type that.

Scoring commitments from blue-chip passers has been a problem for Callahan, who enters his fourth year in Lincoln. The arrival of Arizona State transfer Sam Keller takes some sting out of previous quarterback snafus, but Keller has just one year of eligibility left.

Enter Gabbert, who will come on board in 2008 -- and all signs point toward him sticking with the decision and winning the job -- sooner rather than later. Why would he change his mind? Callahan, who along with offensive coordinator Shawn Watson has a connection to the Gabbert family, runs an NFL-style offense that is great prep work for playing on Sundays.

Remember, Callahan took the Oakland Raiders to the Super Bowl in the 2002 season. He knows what he's doing. Gabbert knows that.

Things are gonna start getting REALLY fun again in Lincoln. And I can't wait to get there, too.

God I want to gouge my eyes out whenever I read that. We all know Callahan went to the Super Bowl but very few point out that his team stunk up the league the following year and got ran out of town into Pedey's arms. I still think that attribute of his is also the most overplayed.

Essentially, Callahan took a Raiders team to the Super Bowl that had no reason to be there. I think that overlooking the fact that he got them there and focusing on the dismal proceeding year is folly.

The fact is that Super Bowl Raiders overachieved to get there....and you have to credit good coaching for that.

He got them there and had Gruden in good shape with his offense. Not bad.

But one thing that most forget about the Super Bowl was that their starting center went missing the night before the game. The guy responsible for calling all the line blocking. After the QB the most important part of the offense. I think that had a lot to do with the play of the offense. Not to mention that Gruden knew the offense better than any other coach they could have faced.

But most of all Al Davis. Nothing else really needs to be said. In and out with a the blink of an eye.

All the old Huskers that played for BC think he is great. Work eithic, dedication, loyalty. Hard to question those character traits.

it's just good to hear we're getting a QB who's out of high school. I was getting tired of getting transfers who only stick around for a year or two. It'll be nice to see how the kid develops under a solely Husker program.

Gabbert from Scouts.com (four stars)

"I have a strong and accurate arm. I have great speed and good escapability. I'm really aggressive and never second guess myself. I want to keep improving in everything and become a better overall quarterback. I'd like to read the plays better and learn to throw into all types of different coverages."
Boasts a 4.1 GPA too. Sounds like a good overall kid. I think he'll fit well with our program if this goes through.

I dare you to step in at Oakland and try to do anything productive there. I am not protecting Callahan, as I have also had my doubts, but as long as Al Davis is in charge of that train wreck, it doesn't matter who who put in charge. Mr. string-on-my-glasses-to-make-me-look-cute couldn't supervise a napkin to wipe up Mark Mangino after a rough night at Gates' BBQ.
