A Punt: One of Riley's Favorite Plays

Mike Riley recently called it one of his favorite plays in football.

Scott Booker likened it to a painting or a concerto.

Surely, a play that elicits such soaring praise must be the type that shows up on highlight reels and hype videos. The type that goes viral and, try as you might to avoid it, you are destined to see over and over and over. A bone-crushing hit or a display of supreme athleticism.

Well, not quite.

The play being described by both: A punt downed at the opponent’s 5-yard line or better.

“It’s one of those situations where a (it’s a) craft for a punter,” Riley said. “The ability to do that is not easy or common.”

Said Booker, “It’s kind of like a work of art, right?"

By that measure, Huskers sophomore Caleb Lightbourn is developing a knack for the artful through two games.

The Washougal, Washington, native has downed three punts at the opposing 5 or closer, six at the 15 or closer and has yet to record a touchback.

We need to stop being so predictable and start punting on 1st downs... keep the Defense on their toes, you know.

I believe fully that the punt is one of Riley's favorite plays, as evidenced by his lack of commitment to rushing, and overall mediocre game management.
