Wow! Didn't see this coming at all. Making a lateral move and leaving his alma mater.

Tosh Lupoi has been named defensive line coach and defensive run game coordinator at Washington, Husky head coach Steve Sarkisian announced today.

Lupoi comes to Washington from California where he spent the last four years as defensive line coach.

“Coach Lupoi is a terrific young coach and a dynamic recruiter,” Sarkisian said. “He will have an immediate impact with our team both on the field and in recruiting.”

Lupoi was the youngest full-time coach in Cal history when he joined the staff at the age of 26 in 2008 and remained the youngest Pac-10 coach for two additional seasons. In all, he was associated with Cal football for 12 years having spent six as a Golden Bear player (2000-05, including an extra season due to the granting of a medical redshirt), two as a graduate assistant (2006-07) and four as defensive line coach.

Okay, maybe a lateral move in title, but not in pay. Per @footballscoop, they're hearing he'll be paid $500k/yr. That's serious coin for a position coach. More than Beck & Papuchis as coordinators. Hell that's more than what Carl & Watson made here.

Cal has an amazing recruiting class. I'll be curious if anyone drops their committment to Cal for sure ... or even switches to Washington.

Holy sh#t. That is a huge pickup for Sark. Very surprised. Wonder how that will effect guys like Ellis McCarthy (committed), Aziz Shittu (finalist), Arik Armstead (finalist), Darius Hamilton (finalist), and Eddie Goldman (kinda finalist).

This is the guy I wanted for our DL coach when Carl left. I don't think we would have paid that much for him though.

These recent defensive hires that Sark has made should make Washington dangerous these next few years if they can put it together from a coaching standpoint. Sark's offense was already good this year but once they figure out how to field a stingy defense like they did during the early 90s, they'll be a pain to deal with.

Yeah, the ol' Pac 12 is going to be an entertaining conference title chase in the future.............

Sounds like it's not exactly a lateral move, either. "Defensive run game coordinator" sounds like co-DC to me.

Seattle is not a football town by any means, but there is a certain buzz in the air that hasnt been seen since the early 90s. Next year they will be playing at the Seahawks field while theirs get a completely re-built. http://www.huskystadium.com/

With Sark, the new defensive staff, new stadium and decent recruiting classes; it should be a fun few years.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a couple of recruits head north to Washington before the dust settles on this.
