And Undecided's Perspective

I realize there's a lot of Fire Watson threads out there already, but I thought this might be a change of pace to reframe some of the discussion. I'll say up front, I have not reached a conclusion as to what I think about Wats and what his future ought to be with this team. Not that it's my decision in the first place, but as a supporter and paying customer of Huskers Inc., we all know that money talks in college football.

The issue I have with the head hunter crowd is that Watson, since Callahan's firing, has had one good season and one miserable one. Usually I would be adamantly opposed against firing a coach for one bad season. That being said, the sheer depth of the offensive hole is staggering. I don't think anyone would have predicted a collapse so complete this season that it mirrors the defensive meltdown of 2007. Our offense took what could have been a legitimate national championship run and instead puked up 9-4, pissing down the leg of the greatest defense in a decade here at Nebraska. The way I think the fans and administration need to approach this is to ask yourselves a few questions.

1. What does this offense do well? The short answer is nothing. Absolutely nothing. We neither run nor pass with any efficiency. No player at any position would get a glance from top-tier teams. But most importantly, they don't score touchdowns. Alex Henry can kick all the field goals he likes. The bottom line is you have to get in the end zone, and we can't.

2. Is the scheme itself sound? This would be easier to answer if we knew what it was. Two times in two seasons Watson has had to completely revamp the offense. Why is that? Down at Texas Tech Mike Leach has no issues with plugging in new players every season, young or old, and producing yards by the bucket. What is our coaches' excuse? We also notice a strange absence of passes to tight ends, arguably our greatest threat in terms of talent and depth.

3. Do the players show improvement? This is the one that almost prompts me to pick up the pitchfork now. Over the course of a season, 13 games, against varying degrees of competition, we have failed with regularity. Most noticeably the quarterbacks––of which the starter has been in the program/system since 2007––show no improvement at all. 13 games should be enough time for a junior quarterback to find a way to get into the end zone, develop some chemistry with his receivers, and figure out what he's most comfortable doing. Zac Lee has done none of those things.

4. Is there reason to suspect it's going to get better? Here is the tricky one, the point that makes the first three less relevant. The season's all but over. But what about the future? My deep concern here is that the offense literally does nothing well at ANY position. They can't block, catch, break runs, open holes, or even get the plays in in a reasonable amount of time. The issue here goes all the way from management to execution, and my faith in Barney Cotton and Ted Gilmore could not be any lower.

Again, still undecided, but this is how I approach the issue. What do you think?

I think you nailed it. I'd almost be surprised if we don't see some changes after the bowl game. I know everyone says that Pelini and TO like Watson, but they MUST be getting frustrated.

TO & Bo simply have to know SW simply has to go. Maybe they'll work out something to make it look like a mutual move....I'm sure SW is a nice guy.....but one way or the other......

All valid points. This season could have been an NC run had we had a mediocre offense. It is a damn shame this defense is practically going to be wasted. Now i think Wats will get another year for the simple reason we replaced alot of parts on the offense from last year. If we dont see vast improvement next year then it will be time that Wats moves on. But i think there should probably be changes this year within the staff namely Cotton and/or Gilmore, however i dont forsee this happening considering Cottons kid plays and could be a vital part to our offense and i dont think Bo would be willing to make a change after only 2 seasons. In both of Cottons stints here the O-line has not been very good, he IS the common denominator. Without a good O-line the offense is nothing and we obviously have seen that this year.

great points. i am terrified that we will have a decent offense next season and SW will save his job. however, i think we will eventually revert because this system is far too complex. it takes too long for players to understand the system, and by the time they do, they have 1 season and are out the door. we need to establish continuity and a system that allows for plug-n-go players. it appears that SW can provide neither of these things.

I'll say this till I'm blue in the face, which I'm about there. Wats shows noo creativity on offense at all. It seriously looked like we ran ten total plays on offense against UT. A lot of other teams have the same or less talent than we do and they are putting up a decent amount of points. Wats just does nothing to get the ball in the hands of his playmakers. Bell and Mendoza are standing on the sidelines wasting speed. I have also said before there is no rhyme or reason for anything Wats does it appears. Bring in Green for two sneaks and a PA pass from our own endzone then pull him out? The fact that Wats is still trying to run the option with Lee is mind boggling at best. I guess you could say he is trying to set up the option pass, but should he really waste three or four drives to set up one freakin shot to go deep? This really reminds me of the Cosgrove situation. After the 05 season he was getting looks from Minnesota and all of us were freaking out bc we just led the nation in sacks. He stayed and we all know how that turned out. Watson was getting looks from several different schools for Head and Assistant coaching jobs and a lot of us were again freaking out. Cosgrove went on to fail miserably and Wats is well on his way after having the worst offense I have ever seen.

Your comment is a summary "Wats shows noo creativity on offense at all. It seriously looked like we ran ten total plays on offense against UT."

When you are the Offensive corodinator, its your plans and schemes that are on trial. Your supposed to have a plan and an identity that schemes your schedules talent.

Please we've been patient with watson long enough...

your summary statement illustrates best that his plans and identity are evidence of a drowning man, clueless of why he got in over his head, terrified, someone wont get there in time to bail him out.

Under most conditions if a player screws up...he's not long for the lineup, in SW case, all the evidence of the stats over long period of time, demonstrates he does little or nothing to try other people eager to make thier mark, but shrinks his playbook to meet his lowered expectations.

Is that because he is not coaching them up?

We cant know all the truths of this complex situation, but the huge playbook reduced to 10 plays a game....

ET could use a can and a string to phone that plan home.

Sean Watson is going to have onemore year at Nebraska to prove that his method, his coaching skills, and his game plan are worthy of Husker Nation. To be honest, I'm not sure Pelini has known this whole time what to do offensively, other than play it safe. He hasn't had any time to work on it either, because he's been developing our defense in order to get us to those 9 wins. Now that he has time, he'll go back to the drawing board WITH Watson for this off-season. After evaluating whether Watson can develop his new offensive recruits and red-shirts this year and whether Watson can adjust to whatever offensive scheme will work for us, he'll make a decision.

I personally think he is the most uninspired offensive co-coordinator I've seen at the D-1 level. But, perhaps his biggest problem is his inability to adjust to the defense from the first half to the second half. Those adjustments, having the mental capacity to see the other team's plan laid out like a chess match, is what will allow you to win a game. Seeing their move, understanding, then anticipating and pouncing. He cannot do it. I don't know how he has lasted this long at this level.

He's with us one more season, then he's out if there's no divine intervention involved.

I doubt Watson is going anywhere. Hopefully there are some changes made somewhere though, because this offense isn't going to get better through magic.

This offense is the jack of all trades, master of none. Actually, it's more like the jack of no trades, master of none. They don't have anything that they can hang their hat. The only thing this offense is consistent in is being horribly bad. That starts with coaching.

How about this...suppose bo and carl weren't the defensive geniuses they are....how many games would we have won? 3? Would we have beaten all 3 sunbelts? The offense did ok in those games.

How about if we didn't have Alex Henery. Let's say a kicker that isn't clutch.

This offensive performance is inexcusable. Period. There should be no free pass on this. Probably what we'll get though is another year of watson....and this time the excuse will be that Bo put the brakes on watson's gameplan in order to not give anymore games away like ISU.

I think the Pelini brother's patience has been worn thin by the lack of offensive production. I also think Watson will be around for another year at the advice of TO.

The more that I think about our offense I think about a boxing match. With our offense, we are like a boxer without arms. We are able to dodge most punches with our defense, but hope that our opponent does damage to itself by falling on the mat.

Problem #1 Barney Cotton :flush

Problem #2 Ted Gilmore :bang

FWIW: Pelini is just as responsible for Green going in for that one drive as Watson is. Also Beck, Gilmore as well as Bo dictate which RB or WR play not Watson. <_<

FWIW-2: Mendoza doesn’t play because he isn’t as good as Helu, Burkhead, Robinson or anybody else that is ahead of him on the Depth Chart. What makes him a playmaker? Because he is fast? :dunno He is another internet myth like Culburt, Thenarse, or any of the other countless players that aren’t good enough to hack it even though they look good on paper.
