Ankrah ready to assume leadership roleBy BRIAN ROSENTHAL / Lincoln Journal Star

Bo Pelini, John Papuchis and Rick Kaczenski took their turns meeting with Jason Ankrah shortly after Nebraska’s Jan. 1 bowl game. Those coaches all told Ankrah the same thing: We need you to be a leader.

This wasn’t exactly news to Ankrah, a fifth-year senior defensive end. He looked around the locker room after Nebraska’s 45-31 loss to Georgia in the Capital One Bowl, and he saw departing seniors, one after another. Baker Steinkuhler, Eric Martin, Joseph Carter, Cameron Meredith. And that’s just on the defensive line.

“I knew right then and there that I’m going to have to speak up,” Ankrah said, “and I’m going to have to act more mature.”

Given the lack of experience on the DL next season, Ankrah definitely needs to be an impact player on the defense. He just needs to find that motor that E-Mart had.

The only lack of experience we will have, is one position at DT, unless you get into 2nd team (that's if the roster lands the way the coaches and most of us expect). Randy Gregory will pretty much have the other DE position locked down, and he is experienced. Thad Randle has experience, and is pretty much locked as a starter as well if he is 100% when game time rolls around. Only position not experienced is the other DT on the DL, which is pretty much Vincent Valentine's position to lose.

I've been looking forward to seeing him step into the spotlight. He had some exciting moments last year.
