Anybody ever tore their ACL?

Because I just did Tuesday night playing basketball.

I was cutting across court and did a jumpstop, turned to shoot and twisted my leg wrong, heard a huge snap and fell over immediately writhing in pain. I don't think I've ever felt that much pain before. I thought I was going to die.

I got MRIs and they said I did a complete tear of my ACL and will need surgery. I'm pretty pissed off about this because I am quite active and this sets me back a lot. It comes at a horrible time too. I never thought I'd appreciate walking the way I am now. I envy people who can walk normally.

Anybody here ever torn their ACL? How'd you feel post-op? How long was the healing process and whatnot?

One of my best friends tore his ACL a few years ago. And yeah, it set him back awhile. I can't remember how long he was off his feet for . . .

Yes I did, back in 1981 in a football game against Fremont. Of course that was the 3rd game of the season and ended my senior year. The rehab after the cast came off was tough as anything I had ever done, but I would say they are much better at repairing them now and you should have a better outcome than i did. Mine turned out good but there is still a little looseness in it.

By the time I went to college I was able to try out for the team at Wayne State but with a brace on and that cut down on my speed and my confidence in the knee never returned. At least I tried though.

Just do what the PT people say and work your butt off in rehab and you should be fine.

GOOD LUCK

Yep in my younger days of playing "TJ Hooker"...I jumped a fence chasing after a guy who had just bailed out during a long high speed pursuit chase. I was on his heels and we both went over the fence. When I came down I heard a loud snap, and that was all she wrote. I tore my ACL, MCL and meniscus all at the same time. They had to go in and take the Achilles tendon from a cadaver and re-attach the ligaments. Took damn near a year to heal. This was 9 years ago. At times it still stiffens up after I play a weekend of Softball. Words of advice.... DON'T RUSH THE HEALING PROCESS! Take your time, do your rehab and don't over do it. Remember, eventhough you may think it feels better it's not. Listen to the Dr's and you will be back up and running in no time. Mine was the most extreme case of tear you could have in a knee. Nowadays ACL tears are a dime a dozen it seems like. Medical Dr's today are really good at scoping and repairng ACL tears. Good luck!

I will find out Monday if I tore my miniscus in my knee or not because I'm having some serious pain in there. <_< Hopefully I didn't, but my ortho is pretty sure that I did. He'll also have to repair the torn labrum in my right shoulder as well at the same time. I just went through that surgery on my left shoulder about 1 1/2 years ago and it f*&king sucked! The physical therapy is the hardest thing to do, but keep at it and be hard-headed about it.

Tore my ACL in one knee and tore up an MCL and miniscus in the other. Even after rehabbing the hell outta them, they dont work like they used too. I can still walk "normally" but standing in place for a long period of time gets difficult.

friend of mine did in almost the same situation. it took him about a year to recover, but he came back to run XC and played basketball. He worked pretty hard at it i think, so good luck to you man :thumbs

while on the topic of tearing things, i have a torn rotator cuff now, and it sucks!!

Huskerballz........stay positive !!!!!!! Listen to the Dr. and don't rush anything..... with medicine today, you could be back in a decent amount of time. Of course, your age my dictate this a little....younger tends to increase recovery time. As a football coach, I unfortunately see ACL's almost every season. Everyone is different... some kids get hurt in football and are running track by April....others may use Track as a "rehab" tool and are full strength by Summer....

Most kids tell me that post-op isn't too horrible....the 1st time the Dr. bend your knee will be uncomfortable, but after that, kids don't seem to complain much. They just get a little impatient with the crutches.

Good Luck !!!! Remember, stay patient and POSITIVE !!!!!
