Are Husker fans having an identity crisis?

Their passion is legendary. Years ago I stood on the sideline near the end of a game at Memorial Stadium, next to a friend from the Boston Globe, a well-known cynic. The game was already put to bed. The stands were still full. People were still cheering madly as some walk-on spun and churned for extra yards.
"Unbelievable," the well-traveled scribe said as he gazed up into the crowd. "There's nothing like this anywhere."
But now only the indifference is deafening.

What in the name of Tom Osborne is going on here? I have three theories:

1. Nebraska fans are savvy about football. They know the score. This isn't FedEx: New recruiting and offensive systems don't arrive overnight.

2. Husker Nation is getting used to losing, having watched the bar gradually lower the past two seasons.

3. Husker fans don't know who they are anymore.
