Armstrong owning up to his mistakes

Stanton vs. Armstrong should be a fun battle, assuming the coaches allow that battle to take place and don't fall in love with Armstrong and protect him from competition. Which happens. Sometimes coaches fall in love with certain players or their potential.

It is difficult to judge Stanton right now since we have not seen him, but I think it is fair to say that he is going to be a near clone of Armstrong. Live arm+running ability+needs work on passing game = project QB.

Lastly, on the sports writer angle, it's irrelevent what sports writers throw down in the paper. Sure, it's read. And some guys take that to heart. Trust me, you don't want those guys leading your team.

There has to be a bit of difiance of outside opinion and a willinness to win over the locker room. QBs that do those two things go far.

Just look at Johnny Football. He's pretty much an idiot and has been panned by journalists as such. Yet he keeps on making plays and winning. And the team is stumping for him to repeat as the Heisman Trophy winner because when crunch time comes Johnny brings swagger, makes plays and wins games.

Somebody who is crying because of what Tom Shatel wrote won't be doing ANY of that.

Very mature of the young man and quite impressive. He has displayed maturity, humility, responsibility, and leadership.

Last week Tommy was telling reporters that Michigan State could be beat and that when clicking, no one in the country could stop his offense. Then, after Tommy's first loss, he split out the back door of the locker room, avoiding reporters. Let's not build this guy up too much too fast.

I do think he has some great qualities, but let's slow down a little bit and avoid the coach-attacking hyperbole.

I've been an Armstrong supporter the whole way. Has he been turnover prone? Yes, but c'mon people this kid is a freshman! Plus just before that loss to Michigan St. he lead this team to a win against Michigan in Ann Arbor. Armstrong is a leader, and the only stat that matters to me is that he is 5-1 as a starter.

Before I respond, know that I like this kid and I hope and guess that his future is bright.

In today's day and age, being a freshman just is not an excuse anymore - especially for something as fundamental as being turnover prone.

Johnny Manziel was a freshman when he took the nation by storm

Jameis Winston is a freshman.

Marcus Mariota absolutely tore it up as a freshman.

Maty Mauk (Missouri) is a freshman replacing Franklin and playing decent for them.

Christian Hackenberg (Penn State) is putting together a pretty fine season as a true freshman.

Baker Mayfield (Texas Tech) has also put up huge numbers and solid play as a true freshman walk on.

Jared Goff (Cal) is another true freshman with a really good, relatively consistent (not a lot of turnovers) season.

Terrelle Pryor, Braxton Miller, RGIII, Sam Bradford, Colt McCoy, etc. etc. etc. etc. were all relied upon and capable enough to be trusted as freshman quarterbacks. Looking only at the numbers, Tommy couldn't even hold freshman Taylor Martinez' jock.

You quote those 2 as having good seasons but Cal is one of the worst teams in the nation lol.. Hackenburg is doing what he can with his team but last I recalled is Tommy has a better record so far out of those 2 buys but yet everyone wants to sit him down. What gives.

Some one up there said Stanton is gonna be a clone of TA.. Well that sucks since people are saying TA is slow and cant hit the side of a Barn since his knee surgery.. Oh well isnt Stanton coming off a knee injury.

Obviously, the environments, surrounding players, and situations for each quarterback are going to be different. Sure, Tommy is 5-1, but so what? Cody Green was undefeated as a starter, yet we all know how inadequate he was as a quarterback. Win/loss record without context is meaningless, and for the two bolded to have significantly better performances and seasons on worse teams only strengthens my case when looking only at the quarterback.

Tommy's 5 wins include Purdue and Illinois (combined record of 4-16, absolutely awful), South Dakota State (An FCS school), a Hail Mary by a different quarterback against 0-6 Northwestern and an average Michigan team.

I'm just not impressed by that.

The only bad thing about swagger it 96.74% of the time it leads to herpes just ask any frat boy at UNL. But I heard a very interesting comment the other day that you really find out what kind of QB you have around the 6 and 7th game they start. I think it is a great comment because Tommy started 5-0 for neb now I wanna see how he stacks up after a loss and at Happy Valley where they have a very good freshmen QB. If Tommy can go in there and play good sound ball I think he can be a good QB but if he starts to turn the ball over again it will just be T-tragic all over again but this time he won't be so lucky to stay in the game.

He's already shown he can respond after "losing" us a game. He all but lost the NW game with very poor decision, and was not on the field for the miracle winner. Then a week later, goes to Michigan, has a solid game, leads what will be the drive of the year, and doesnt make the big mistake.

I'll just say this: If Tommy wins the job next year, Stanton better get meaningful snaps. That way when/if he does take the reigns over, we won't have to deal with horrible QB development once again.

Also, I think Tommy is going to be significantly better next year due to the experience he is getting now. He is actually running the playbook and being QB rather than handing the ball of 4 straight times without having to check and audible, etc.

I like him too. Really hope he figures it out and succeeds. He has a swagger and smoothness that you can't teach.

This is why I think a lot of Husker fans are so enamored with him or at least some people are anyway. His 'swagger'. Personally I guess I don't get the 'swagger' part of it. I'd rather see focus because right now the 'swagger' isn't getting it done.

I don't even know what to think about this program going forward but I'll always talk QB's. With that being said I'm looking forward to seeing what Johnny Stanton brings to the table. Something tells me it will be a lot more consistent than what Tommie Armstrong has shown us and with less 'swagger' and turnovers taboot.

The only thing we can say for sure that Stanton has better than Armstrong, is speed. Armstrong has a stronger arm, but other than that, I can't say one is better than the other on anything else, because we haven't seen Stanton take a single snap. From his highlights, TA is going to have his hands full come Fall Camp, but just because the kid was stellar in HS, doesn't mean he will be in college. Completely different game. Ask Armstrong. Stellar athlete in HS, struggling and making mistakes as a Freshman in the collegiate level.

Hope you're not talking about 40 time because he runs 4.79. I just don't see what JS really has better than TA other than mayybee throwing accuracy esp on the run. Sorry, I'm just not real sold on him yet.
