Husker associate athletic director quits

BY LEE BARFKNECHT

WORLD-HERALD BUREAU

LINCOLN — Paul Meyers, Nebraska's associate athletic director for major gifts, confirmed this morning that he has resigned after 13 years with the school's development office.

"I'm not going to make any public comments," he said. "I'll just let whatever release comes out from the athletic department speak for itself."

Meyers, a former Husker baseball All-American, has been a popular figure with many prominent boosters of Nebraska athletics.

The former three-sport star at Omaha Westside said he will stay in the Omaha area, but is undecided on his career plans.

As an outfielder at Nebraska, Meyers earned first-team All-America honors in 1986. In his three-year NU career, he hit .350 with 36 homers, 209 RBIs, 250 hits and 60 stolen bases.

He was a fourth-round pick of the San Francisco Giants and played in their minor league system before shoulder problems ended his pro career.

Meyers returned to Lincoln as a Nebraska assistant baseball coach before joining the development office in 1994. In 2000, he was named development office director. In 2005, he was named the associate A.D. for development, and earlier this year he became associate A.D. for major gifts.

Conspiracy theories will undoubtedly come out of the wall, that's for sure. People eat this stuff up.

Wasn't he in charge of getting big donations or something? Maybe not enough big "gifts"?

I think it's pretty hard to point the finger at him if this was the case because Pud has slammed the door on some of the big gift donors. Warren Buffet is only like the 2nd or 3rd richest individual in this country and Pud managed to piss him off.

true enough. didn't buffet hold some kind of event for solich after he was let go thanking him for all of his years of service to the university. in addition, didn't buffet come out publicly against his firing? anyway, tough to get big donations when the premiere sport at the university is tanking.

Sounds like he flat out quit. Most people in such positions don't leave their job unless they have a new job lined up, Meyers is jobless at the moment.

Paul Meyers’ resignation from his position as Nebraska associate athletic director for major gifts “leaves a big hole in terms of (financial) development,” according to one of the school’s most prominent donors.

“I don’t know who can fill it as well as Paul filled it,” Howard Hawks said. “This is pretty unfortunate for the university.“

Meyers said Thursday he forwarded his resignation Tuesday. He declined further comment.

Nebraska athletic director Steve Pederson informed Husker athletic staff Thursday morning that Meyers resigned for “personal reasons.” The resignation is effective Oct. 15, Pederson said.

“I have very high regard for Paul Meyers,” Pederson said. “He’s a good man. He had success here as a student-athlete, as a coach and as an administrator. I thank him for all of the contributions he made here and wish him the very best with everything he ever does.“

Meyers, an All-American Husker baseball player in 1986, was named associate athletic director for development in 2005 after serving as an assistant athletic director the previous two years. Earlier this year, he stepped into the title of associate AD for major gifts, meaning he was the lead fundraiser for bigger-project type of gifts.

In fact, Meyers was involved in virtually every athletic project involving major contributions in the last decade.

As a result, Meyers has a close relationship with several of Nebraska’s most prominent athletic donors, including Charles Myers.

In December of 2004, Myers gave the Husker athletic department a $5 million gift for the Tom and Nancy Osborne Athletic Complex.

“Paul’s a buddy,” Myers said Thursday from Scottsdale, Ariz. “He’s a very energetic young man who’s honest and has great integrity.“

Myers hadn’t heard of Meyers’ resignation until being informed by a reporter Thursday morning.

“I’m surprised — shocked,” Myers said. “I would’ve thought he’d work at Nebraska until he died.“

Hawks, a university regent and close friend of Meyers, also was surprised by the announcement. Hawks spoke with Meyers Thursday.

“He was very positive,” Hawks said. “He isn’t trying to create issues or rumblings or anything like that.“

Meyers has guided the Husker athletic department’s development efforts since 2000 after originally joining the staff as a development officer in 1994. In the summer of 1999, he was named senior development officer and interim director of development.

Before moving to the development office, Meyers spent three years as an assistant coach with the Nebraska baseball team after ending his professional playing career.

As a Husker senior in 1986, he batted .347 with 20 doubles and 66 runs batted in. A career .350 hitter, he ranks second in school history with 209 RBI. He’s one of 16 Huskers in program history to be named a first-team All-American.

Meyers lives in Omaha with his wife, daughter and son.
